A SOHC V8 is much wider than an OHV V8 as Kawboom mentioned. DOHC? Fagedaboutit.... and we have.... LOL!
Absolutely, no DOHC, no 3+ valves per cylinder, nothing “complicated” or unproven, unless it has a history of BILLIONS of miles / hours of use. The least amount of parts is best.

But, we MUST have 2 spark plugs per cylinder (regulatory).

We have no specific limit on width, but weight is ALWAYS a concern. Any V-8 piston engine in a typical car is narrower than an opposed piston engine in most airplanes.

Cars that used overhead cam V8 engines almost universally use STRUT type front suspension. The strut lets you delete the top A-arm of the car and fit things like super wide overhead cam heads and exhaust. This is why you can fit a tall deck big-block in cars like S197 mustangs without getting out the sawzall.
We don’t have any of those issues in an airplane. Thanks.

Default OEMs live by NIH

Tony, the "auto manufacturers" ONLY use engineering that they create.
Most here believe that performance is FIRST.
Thus, "Let it out", fit a LARGE Exhaust Valve

If you're really serious about a SOHC setup, search out and contact Pete Aardema. He's been playing with SOHC SBC stuff for a long time.

I have spoken with them both, extensively, about this concept. Their shop is about 10 miles from me. They even started up the old Ford that has the SOHC setup.

1) Do NOT need nor want 3+ valves per cylinder

2) Do NOT need nor want DOHC

3) Not much of an operational history with this

4) No idea what the camshaft drive is

5) I’m not sure that they are even in production

I randomly stumbled upon this thread, I have not read all of it, and I realize we're on LS1Tech, but have you considered basing your engine on an already super reliable SOHC V8? Ford Mod motors have a proven track record and have plenty of aftermarket parts that could meet your criteria, as best as I can tell. An aluminum block 4.6/5.4 (or a 5.8 based on the GT500 motor if you need the extra displacement) could be a good choice. I also saw your interest in putting an intercooler in the V and, I don't know if you've ever seen one, but the V in a mod motor is cavernous and has plenty of room for a water-cooled intercooler.

Edit: I see not too far up you were posting Ford Mod motor images and working on that, so clearly you got there before I did lol.

I think that it’s going to be gear driven camshafts. Here’s a concept, literally with only TWO different size gears. Now, to figure out where the starter / generator goes.

Default I too started a NEW Ford SOHC 427 when i worked on the Hill

I ran an SBC Quad Cam engine for Bizzarrini, on my dyno, with my EMS.
I ran an aircraft engine with no valves, cams, etc, AND an impellor in the TAIL
Tony, will your first flight also be out of Romana ?
