Default New GM Hydra-Matic 6 speed RWD Planetary Manual transmission

https://ls1tech.com/forums/manual-transmission/508624-new-gm-hydra-matic-6-speed-rwd-planetary-manual-transmission.html

I doubt many people are interested in this new transmission, in the actual transmission section of the forum.

I'd imagine something of a Lenko-type setup with multiple shifters on it one day.

Reminds me of an article from years ago on how to modify the valve body of the 4L60E to make it into a 6-speed... basically, 1st, 1st/OD, 2nd, 2nd/OD, 3rd, OD. Wonder it that'd still work on today's A4 cars???

I'm really interested to see this things guts. The PDF stated full mechanical linkages, but in an auto trans the gearsets are controlled by hydraulic pistons holding pressure on friction clutches. It'll be interesting to see how they altered it to be a synchronized mechanical interface.

Kinda, but then the GV unit would make it into an 8-speed.

It was in a Hot Rod mag quite a few years back... you had to drill out something in the valve body, rearrange a chack ball here and there, and voila... an A6 trans! Possibly early-mid 90s when I read it.

Im more impressed by Dodge variable speed transaxle....doesnt shift. I had thought about that design before now someone is doing it.

If that setup handles lots of power reliably, I'd love to see a wild Hemi on that trans pushing a rail job down the strip.

me too, but no production CVT can take a large amount of torque..... (and therefore large HP...)

That CVT? or CVT's in general? Because CVT transmissions are far from new.

CVTs are weak. Still new but I do not see them coming up with a strong unit. The design does not really allow for it. Riding in one is comparable to riding in a stalled car. The concept with capability of handling power sounds like you could have a variable stall. Imagine that. Hmmm....4k seems too tight lets loosen it some...Then tighten it for the ride home.

production CVTs designed for production automobiles.

they arnt new. the concept is still old, but no-one mass produces one i can stick behind my LS1 and dragrace with.

the egg-shaped Nissan SUV that my boss drives has a CVT, and its nice for apps like that, but it wont take the amount of power i want to put thru it.

And they probably never will (hold big power). Subaru had 'em almost 20 years ago and it's taken that long to beef 'em up enough to hold that Nissan's whopping 245hp. I guess that's what happens when you use a belt to drive the car. *cough* rubber band *cough*

no, im a firm believer that if they keep at it enough, there will one day be a fairly simple one that works for large power output.

and then we'll all go "OH! why didnt i think of that?!"..

GM had a interesting idea for a all metal gear design.. i need to dig that picture up...

Maybe. But then again then again, according to wiki, the first CVT patent was applied for in the late 1800's They better get on the ball with that great idea. It's been over a hundred years already.

same could be said for the electric car, or a couple 100 other devices.
