Default GTO Steering Wheel in an F Body?

I am thinking about trying a GTO steerring wheel in my Formula.

I like the fact that it still has a stock look but with a much thicker wheel. It also already has the Pontiac Arrow on it.

Has it been tried? If I got one with the airbag could it be connected?

I have no issues designing an adaptor for it if needed. In fact I would like to have it a little closer to me the the stock one. I really wish it had telescoping steering wheel like my Dodge.

The silver spokes on the steering wheel wouldn't have anything to match to, like it does in the GTO.

I am ahead of you, I have custom silver gauges, silver HVAC, silver Light panel and 3 silver Ultra lite gauges in the vents. I was also considering painting my Stereo Bezel, and the window switch panels silver to match.

I just want a small splash of silver here and there. To break up all that grey and black I have now.

Not that I have experience with it, but I'd be all for switching out mine as well. I like the shape of the wheel, just not how thin the spokes are. I really like my Saab 9-3 wheel and wish I could get a similar type for the t/a.

I would just get the ENTIRE STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN and try to make it fit since GTOs are already telescoping...

any way I don't really like the GTO wheel it looks too generic.

why not just go with a nice aftermarket one.

I doubt wiring a horn, air bag and MAYBE steering wheel controls could be all that hard.

The steering wheel controls you would just use a GTO interface kit for an aftermarket head unit.

Horn is easy, air bag isn't many wires either....

Blinkers, wipers, cruise control, etc... could get tricky. If you had a wiring diagram for both cars then wiring would not be the hard part at all, fitment might be BUT if you want telescoping you have to do what you have to do.

I just want a thicker steering wheel. I may simply wrap it with a leather wrap.

I already did the wrap. It feels better but the looks are less than I want.

Not a great pic, but you get the idea. BTW it is still a work in progress. Like the rest of the car right now.

The GTO has a very thick wheel. I like the plain look. I also want to have an air bag in the car still. I have heard that the insurance company can deny a claim if you have deactivated a safety device. The laws are a pain in the ***. Hell I am trying to build a 455 LS7 to pass our emissions laws. Legally too.

Whatcha gonna do about the airbag? I doubt they'd work and removing them is always an option but comes with risks naturally.

Airbag just needs a 12v signal to pop it (done it intentionally with a battery). I'm sure you can wire it in...

but it has a calibrated resistance across the coil. get an airbag simulator and plug it into an f body and a GTO and see if it cuts the light off. SIR is always monitored through the SDM. if mine was still in tact i would check it out, but i BELIEVE all gm steering wheel air bag modules are the same resistance. dont quote me on that. pm me if you need more info, i never check this section

Pretty much any GM airbag will work with any module but if you change your module some of the other components on the class 2 data line might not like it. Things like this might happen: configuration mismatch code. no communication at all.
