Doesn't need a "tail" just designed to have one. Tail is just the little bit that comes down below the ball.

Default any shift ****?

So, after adapter is on, I can use ANY shift ****? Why does their site say MUST be 2"? I know I'm a pain, but don't wanna waste money on an expensive **** that won't work.

I think its just a tactic to get you to buy thier ****. As long as you have the same thread pattern, you should be fine. And i agree with MATT427, they look cheesy without a boot. I have a redline on mine

^I doubt it.

They say you should get a two inch tail because if you decide not to get a boot that covers all the way up to the bottom of the **** then the shift adapter will be revealed. The extra 2 inches cover it all the way...
