salvage yard gauge cluster replacement

salvage yard gauge cluster replacement low coolant level light is semi permantly on -> goes off after temp is over 1/4 and car is restarted
after checking the level and swapping out the "low coolant" warning sensor it turns out its the gauge cluster thats throwing the fault code and the Chevy dealer has quoted me $500 for a new gauge cluster as its a unit
after a quick seach Ive found a salvage yard that has a gauge cluster for under $200
Soooo my question is where will the mileage read from? the 80,xxx my car has done or whatever mileage the replacement gauge cluster has done?

Yep , the mileage was stored in the cluster on the f-cars . All newer GM's are where the mileage is stored in the BCM and the cluster will read correct info for youre car . Should be hard to find a cluster in the 80's , there always seems to be so many for sale , well ..maybe not for u . Just saw your car was a 98 . There are electrical differences between the 98 cluster and the 99-02 cluster even though they all look the same . Also gotta watch someone passing off a 97 LT1 cluster as a LS1 version , they too look identical to the other ones .

anybody think I'll have issues if I got with differnet year cluster?
or will it be direct replacement if i stick to 98 -02 year range?

you are going to be pestered with the "Air Bag" light when you switch clusters and like the others have stated the mileage is stored in the odometer. You need to goto the stealership and have them link it to the BCM. Check ebay if you really want a new cluster. They are usually around $50 or pull the light.

Just unplug the sensor and see if that fixes it first...it always has for me. If not you have two other options...put tape behind the "gauge overlay" so the bulb doesnt shine through (fixed the security light on my Formula Firehawk that way) or pull the bulb. Any of them are free.

First of all DO NOT install a 1998 cluster in 1999+ cars or vice versa unless you like the smell of smoke, just a heads up.
Second of all, the mileage is actually stored in the LCD board itself which you can just unplug from your old one and transfer to your new one.
Last of all, $200 is WAYYYY to friggin much. Get on ebay and get a high mileage one for like $80.

97ramsst - allready replaced the sensor as told it was the problem by stealership...after previous stealership charged a Ton to run a diagnostic

Take cluster out, pull off the clear board that the overlay is stuck to (it just pulls straight off, only thing holding it in are the pins of the needle motors, just pulls straight out), look directly behind where the low coolant symbol is and you'll see the bulb.
Also, can anyone confirm the mileage being stored on the LCD board (like I had said)? I had an issue with one where it seems it was stored on the cluster itself...
