Default tinting the rear window defrost bubbles

ive always owned trucks before so this hasnt been an issue, but when i took my car to a tint show he said he would want to paint the defrost bubbles at the top of the back window. i know that some cars you have to do this to get coverage since the film cant make contact with enough of the window to stick

i just wanted to see if other people had to paint theirs or not, or if this guy just didnt know what was goin on. he was a well reccomended shop, but i never take my stuff anywhere so im always paranoid!

thanks

My buddy did that to his when he went to a local tint shop, that has done numerous Fbodies, they suggested the same thing. His turned out great, if not the shop has to keep putting heat where the film overlays the dotted area so the film conforms to it and sticks. Basically it makes the tint guys job easier and gives your car a cleaner look.

Thats all he used is some Krylon-semi gloss black paint, just have to mask off a lot to avoid overspray.

I really need to paint mine.. How hard is it? Should I go to the tint place and have them cut the top part off so I can paint it or what?

IF it's previously tinted and bubbling badly, remove ALL the tint, sterilize the area w/windex then rubbing alcohol. Paint the desired area w/a black paint (gloss, semi-gloss or flat, don't matter) and take back for new tinting.

The top part of my window was tinted with a, at the time, new tint about 2-3 years ago that was made specifically for the "dots" on the back window. It filled them in perfectly and is not painted.

Weird...my 5% tint was done 3 yrs ago and has no problems w/ bubbles or peeling off the dots. No paint either.

Any shops in the Houston area that do this? Or is it something you do yourself? If it's already tinted do you just paint over the tint or remove tint, paint, then retint?

here In charlotte I asked if they used vinyl, paint, or what not.. they said they sand down the dogs and just tint over it, OR they can just end the tint at the dots.

I had them sand it.

Mine didn't stick over the dots, but the shop that did it told me they could use vinyl if the normal tint didn't work. I just haven't had a chance to go back and get them to fix it yet.

For a show quality look I highly recommend painting the area with any cheap black paint. I used flat black as the inside of the "dots" area is flat anyway. Just be sure to mask a nice clean line as to where the paint ends for the best appearance. I used 1/8" pinstriping masking tape from a hobby shop as it is easy to curve along the contour of the glass. It would be much harder to get a nice curve from wider 3/4" masking tape.

Pics of mine....

I painted myn in Flat Black. I don't have any pics up right now. But it looks amazing. A local member just saw myn the other day when he was checking out my car. NHRAMAN was amazed at how well it looked.
