Default Leather/Pleather Dash Mat - Should I Do it?

Been kicking this idea around for a bit. I'm tired of the ugly fuzzy dash pad that attracts hairs and whatnot in the camaro, and whats underneath it is an even uglier cracked dash with a few chunks missing.

All I would need to do is look around fabric stores for a roll long enough and wide enough and use the current dash pad as a template and probably make minor modifications to where it ends up front. I don't know how to stitch/sew very well but my dad does on a machine and I could get him to sort of fold the edges and put a red or white stitch around the edges to make it look nice and tidy.

I'm afraid it'll turn out bad or won't be worth the trouble....should I do it?

Basically, I'm asking if this has ever been done before.

I don't see the point in spending well over $100 versus maybe $30 and some time.

Yeah but why would you want a tacky cover? I have dash mats of all kinds. Just looks like crap IMO. Id gladly spend the money to fix it then cover it up.

Unless ur gonna wrap the piece so its not a mat and is actually attached to the piece

I've been throwing this same idea around for a while. Getting a nice u/v resistant vinyl or leather and wrapping the dash seeing as how mine is broken. I think it has the potential to look good but I cant seem to find any reasonably priced materials that arent thick marine grade vinyl.

Specialized Stainless offers a UV resistant interior leather wrapping kit. You could buy that & then just wrap whatever you want in leather. Would look tons better than a dash pad/mat thing sitting on top of the dash.

+1, I've always wanted to buy that kit..but being in college and paying for gas is hard enough. I say wrap it with that stuff from specialized stainless and see how it looks. Whatever you do don't buy a new dashpad from a dealership....thatll set you back 200+

Be forewarned though wrapping the dash is no easy task & you might even need a seam or 2 to keep it wrinkle free. And with the upper dash pad you'll have to make provisions for the defroster if your car gets driven alot in weather you need a defroster for.

I wrapped my dash pad, only problem was the defrost vent, which i covered over and it looked sweet, until I needed defrost and had to cut a hole in my dash.
