Default TCI or TransGO shift kits?

Wondering which one of these performs better than the other or are they basically the same.

From my experience, they perform about the same. The TCI is much easier to install, however, and therefore is not so easy to screw up.

So they have the same features? will the TCI hold what gear it is in unless its in overdrive?

well from what i understood (probably wrong) lets say im at a dyno and they cant keep my car from shifting from 3rd to 4th will the shift kit fix this as to not allow it to upshift to 4th until it is manually put up into overdrive?

so basically when i have it in 1st it stays until i shift(which i it already does i think?) and when its in second stay in second until i put it into third and then on to overdrive, and also i dont know if it already does this stock because ive never tried except one time i left it in frist and it bounced off the limiter, so i dont know if thats the way it is for all the gears.

and sorry if ive further confused you.

If you put the shifter into 3rd, it won't shift to OD. It won't do it without a shift kit, it won't do it with one.

Correct, it's like that even stock. It won't shift past the gear that you've selected. If the dyno has a problem with it shifting into 4th, it's because they had the gear selector in 4th and they deserve a big DUH!!!

I think in some other cars they don't do it stock. Or it could be referring to the full manual valve bodies in which you can hold it in one gear (it won't even downshift out of your selected gear under any circumstance.)

The Transgo ad says:
"Holds 1st, 2nd, and 3rd to any rpm.
Back shifts at your command."

So we would all learn something if someone could explain what that means in detail and why we would need it.

manual 1st already holds 1st;
manual 2nd already holds 2nd;
so are we getting manual 3rd that holds 3rd...?
this is just manual mode 3rd only with no 1-2-3 shifting, just 3rd only, right...?
and what is backshifting...?

Beats me. With all of the A4s I've had, if you put 'em in 3rd, they'de hit the limiter and still NOT shift into 4th.

Think your dyno operator might be fibbin'.

The TCI Shift Kit was simple to install.

However, I noticed something with the transmission after the installation. It would REALLY jerk the car when i went from [P] to [D].

I talked to Colonel and Kevin Steele @ TCI about this. Colonel wasn't having the problem, but Kevin told me it is doing that because of the increased line pressure. He says it's normal so I take his word for it and drive around like that.

After installing headers and playing with the MAFT, I saw that my LTerms were positive, indicating a lean condition. From previous posts by the Colonel I remembered that when the LTerms are positive, the line pressure is increased through the PCM and therefore gives auto transmissions hell (this was a post about MAF ends and auto trannies dieing from them).

So when I lowered the LTerms, the jerking went away and the car shifts just fine into [D] when warm still mildly does it when cold in the mornings.

Long, but I wanted to be thorough. So after you install any kit, make sure your LTerms are in check.

Not sure if this is the proper forum for this, but if not, I'm sure that the Colonel will guide me. Every year TCI contributes parts to a local car club who auctions them and gives the procedes to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This year we donated several parts including a gift certificate for a Saturday Night Special Converter and a shift kit. You can chose whatever shift kit that you want (ie. TH350, PG, C4, 4L60E, etc.) This year the car show was rained out, so the parts were not auctioned off. We decided to auction them on Ebay. All procedes will go to Make-A-Wish.

Yeah Kevin, start a thread in the Sponsors section about this.

"From previous posts by the Colonel I remembered that when the LTerms are positive, the line pressure is increased through the PCM and therefore gives auto transmissions hell"

Yes, MAF ends or ported ends will bring Ltrims positive and they lower the reported load to the PCM which should LOWER tranny line pressure, not raise it. Anyway, just thought I'd clarify. Glad to hear you got your problem straightened out.

How much it jerks when you go from P to D also depends on your idle speed, the difference in idle speed between in gear and out of gear (it can change according to if the AC is on or not as well), and VERY importanty, the characteristics of your stall converter.

With my TCI kit, 3500 stall, and all idles set at 675, it doesn't jerk. It's just quicker and snappier than stock.

Superior/Fairbanks is about to release their new 4l60e kit. Might check out Superior.com for info.
It's actually been real world tested in a C5 driven all over the south, not just in a laboratory mock-up. (No flames intended for TCI or Sonnax)

My TCI shift kit has been real world tested all over the south for about 20000 miles.
