Question 04-4l80 center support bearing recess ???

I was starting to stack all the parts in my 2004 4l80 for assembly and noticed something, The center support does not have the recess for the bearing, I thought that all 99up had it. But i noticed that when i got the tranny from a junkyard for 250.00 that it would have bad clutches or something wrong or broke , But when i took it all apart there was nothing wrong every thing looked almost new inside no wear at all, Plus every thing below the center support is the new style but just not the center support . The tranny had a sticker on it GM remanufactured .
How can i check and see if its the right center support , Is there a pacific height or clearance to check.

Thanks, Randy

Are you talking about in the rear of the center support?

Pics would help.

I went a head and stacked the transmission up the the center support and every thing went in perfecty, The center support bolt lined up to. What is the recess on the bottom of the center support for ? Also it has the .040" shims behind the trust bearing that supost to make up the recess on the center support.

Yes, in the rear, were it sets down in the Reaction Carrier & sun gear. The Center Support supost to have a recess ( a machined lip )for the thrust bearing. But for some reason mine dont.

on the newer models they made the planetary gears longer, and i think they used the .041 shim to recenter the sun gear, and that required cutting the recess in the center support for the shim
as i remember you had to use the whole package of parts together, was also a service package for older trans
there is a meas. to see if all the parts are correct, as i remember it is at the center sup. and sun gear shaft by the grove-i would have to look it up in one of my books somewhere-i guess theres always the chance that instead of a recess, they just cut the whole thing down .041
the only way of telling is really meas an old one to yours

I do have the new style sun gear & sun gear shaft with the grooves cut in them. That's the thing ! I have all the new styles (99-up) parts below the center support. Its just the center support don't have the recess to compensate for the shim. Is there any height difference in the center supports ,with and with out the recess in the rear lub design supports.

This would not bother me but all i hear and read is the new style has the recess ,and mines a 2004 mod. and it don't.

i just took apart a 2005 unit today, and i looked at the center support where the books show the recess, and mine doesnt have one either-it has a race with a lip that goes down, then the bearing, then the outer race(i guess you can call it a race, what the bearing rides on)
must have been a chance where they did something diff-as far as i can tell, this unit has never been apart-it does have the proper sun gear shaft and gears shown in the update-im gonna reasemb. the shaft/support tomorrow and meas the amount by the groove shown in the book

My ATSG manual says with the correct combination of parts the ridge on the sun gear shaft should be near .050 above the center support.

ok, i went out and put the sungear and shaft, bearings and enough parts together to ck the dim. given in the atsg man., and it was almost dead on the .050 mark, not flush and not .090
so this tells me that even though they show 99 up as having the recess and shim, there was ap. a later change that eliminated that recess, as mine is a 2005 unit, no recess, no .041 shim, just the 3 piece bearing-prob something more updated would show a change, most of these books are older

I checked mine today, and I also had .050" but with the .041"shim. So GM must have removed the recess and still used the shim in the 04 models

There is a sleeve on that support that makes up that recess. Basically the surface where the bushing in the planet rides. I have seen when a new bushing is installed the sleeve will push down a bit. It's OK! I would just measure the distance from the top of the support to the ledge on the sun gear shaft where the direct drum sits. If the measurement is between .040-.050 IIRC you are fine. If it is more than that you have left something out. If it is less than something is mismatched or not seated properly.
