Default Stock LS1 flexplate

This is a dumb *** question, but will the starter still engage if the flexplate is turned around backwards? Thanks.

i don't see how the flexplate would fit because the flexplates are recessed in the middle a little bit where they bolt to the motor.

The reason asking is because i had mine off and was 99.9% sure put it back on correct. I installed a tci 3500 converter and had a horrible vibration so i just assumed it was the converter, so i now have a Vig 3600 in and it does the same thing. I was reading a thread about a converter install and he mentioned he had alot of play between the converter and flexplate and someone mentioned he might have the flexplate on backwards.... I too have the same problem with slack between the converter and flexplate. It could possibly just simply need shimming, that post just got me to thinking.

I don't own an LS1 engine, but I believe you will find it has a non-symmetrical bolt pattern, making it impossible to install incorrectly. I expect that one or more bolt holes are moved a few degrees off, so that you can only install it one way.

One of the truck sites has numerous photos of how LS1 and other flexplates & converters mix, including several photos of potential problems when installing aftermarket converters.

Okay, so i just measured the distance between the verter pad and the flexplate and come up 3/8 - 7/16. Two washers is 1/8 in. Will that be enough or to much? I know an 1/8th in. of play between the verter and flexplate is usually the norm. Half of 3/8's is 3/16's, right? I just dont know if 1/8 in. of shims will be to much or not enough.... All help is appreciated.

You want about 3/16" gap pull back. I would not go beyond that.

So, do not shim more that 3/16's?

I give up.... I shimmed the converter with a .078" washer and the vibration is still the same. I don't know what else to do. Put some more shim in?? With the converter pushed all the way back i got .270" between the verter and flexplate. So with .078" shim that would leave .192" of play. In the thread Vince posted he said that .060" to .187" of play was fine. I don't know. I just want the vibration to go away. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Eric.

Cam and stall. I changed converters because i thought it was the TCI i had in it, so i bought a Vig and now its worse. Kinda thought it might be the harmonic balancer, but like i said the vibration got worse when i put the Vig in.

Well it does it pretty much all the time but at certain speed's and rpm's its worse. At idle its bad, but its weird, its kind of a "pulsing" vibration. At 75ish its worse also, with the "pulsing". Its also bad when i rev it in park at certain rpms when its falling. Could i unbolt the converter from the flexpate, push the verter all the way back, put the starter back on and start it and see if the vibration is still there?? If it was then that would eliminate the converter back being the problem.

i don't know that answer. i would be hoping the converter would not slide foward and hit the flexplate if you don't have them bolted together.
