99 a4 with 2.73 bone stock went 9.24 1/8 79 mph
lid, free mods went 8.96 1/8 81 mph
3.42 and aluminum driveshaft, best of 8.35 1/8 at 86 mph
i would say that gears are definately worth it.
on the street, 2.73 wouldn't spin. 3.42 spin all through 1, and into 2nd.
and i get the same gas mileage as stock.

find a tire/gear calculator online. you have to have you tire size as well as tranny ratios
plug all these and and it will tell you what rpm at what speed you will be going, plug in different tire sizes and different gear ratios to suit. im sure with this and your current trap speed your could set your car up to be at whatever rpm you wanted at a certain speed in a certain gear.
what i havent seen in this thread is.............how much of a difference is it to go from 3.42 to 4.10's in a manual car?

Im debating going with the 3.23's in my 2000 Z28...its my daily driver, and I spend a decent amount of time on the highway. So based on what Ive been reading I think Id want either 3.23's or 3.42's.
I can attest to 3.42's I had a 2002 V6 camaro Y87 (3.42 gears) with just about every possible bolt-on/mod except forced induction. I had a little over 300rwhp and I was walking stock mustang GT's off the line. Ive got a Z28 w/2.72's and sometimes I find myself wanting my old V6

I had a 3600 stall, FLT trans, tune, lid and catback with 2.73's on Drag radials. I ran consistent 12.6-12.7's with 1.7 60's around 107-108. I went to a 3.73 gear with the same mods and gained .1-.15 and 3mph. I gained a lot of MPH because the car on 2.73's was shifting right at the finish line. Seat of the pants the 3.73's felt like a 1 sec gain.. but... in reality it was not that much of gain in real 1/4 mile time. If you already have a high rpm stall gears won't make as much a difference in actual 1/4 mile time because the stall keeps the car in the powerband as it is so there just isn't as much of a gain to be had.
Now if you are talking stock stall... yeah gears will make a big difference because the car will come into the powerband a lot sooner.
