Default TH 400 shift firmness?

I just swapped my t-56 for a built 400 and it's paired with a new vig 3200 stall. I was wondering how firm the shifts are supposed to feel. This thing shifts slower and more gently then my 08 tahoe! I was hoping for a slam into gear. Is this normal?

This depends on the shift kit if you used any. verify your fluid level first check the vacuum.

Fluid level is good. Put in 7.5 quarts with the cooler- sound about right? Also this 400 is fmvb do i need to hook up the vac?

if it was a new build with a converter it should be closer to 10 quarts. And no if you have a FMVB you do not need vacuum.

Well its not a new build but it was completely drained when it was shipped to me. I did install a new cooler though. My guess is the dipstick which I have no idea what brand must be wrong. I guess i'll bump it up a quart or two. Can anything bad happen from over filling?

Aside from some flames due to oil coming out the vent or fill tube, no. Actually if you question the dipstick reading and are sure you only put in 7.5 quarts. It would not hurt to add one additional quart or two just to see if that helps. Ideally you need the right stick and tube. Transmission are very sensitive to low fluid levels.

Ya i'm sure it 7 1/2 in it. Put 1/2 quart in tq and started with 5 in the tranny then went to 7 when running and warm. Thanks for the help.

If you want to firm up the shifts you can replace the vac modulator with a vac modulator plug.
Or leave the modulator on it and adjust the screw in all the way. Even with no vacuum line connected it'll help a little bit.
