Red face A cam with a stock 4L60E?? Crazy or not??

Got full bolt ons and a pair of ls6 heads and a LG g5x4cam. Im in need of a vehicle. Im planing on going with everything plus a trangs go shift kit and a stock transmission. Thinking about putting a converter from yank. Maybe a SS3600 or 4000. Would this force my tranny to much. How durable would my tranny be. Keep in mind im also breaking in my motor. All info and comments r welcomed. Thanks in advance. Antonio

If you have to prioritize, you'll see more out of the converter than
the cam stock:stock.

There's enough "give" in the stock converter that you can still idle
at 800 and not push -too- hard at park. I'm idling at 750 with a
224 cam. Your cold fast idle is higher than this.

But the stock converter will drag you down to lower RPM on the
shifts and not let you realize the full potential. That's not a problem,
just a shortcoming. If you have the valvetrain for it, you can do a
fair bit just by fixing the factory-stupid shift settings, converter
or no.

Stock with a shift kit huh. Mine will be a daily driver. About 40 miles a day (average) more on weekends of course. How would a 2000-2400 do. Would a yank ss3600 do better for both track and street? opinions and comments welcomed...

I dd it for 6 months after my cam install.Got tired of that so did the neighbors at 6am in the morn.LOL.I would at least do a 3600,but to tell u the truth a 4000 will drive about the same and wil pick-up at the track alot over the 3600 with that cam.Gears will help also,3.73s would be ideal.

I ran a Yank SS3600 when I was cam-only and then heads/cam with the stock 4L60E but it gave up within a couple thousand miles. I drive my car real hard which doesn't help. With the proper trans cooler a stock trans should last a little while some people have been very lucky and have put several thousand miles on them.

^This is a very good point. You definitely want to have a trans cooler installed if you put in any converter; you'll need it to counteract the heat increase from a converter. A B&M tranny cooler is only ~$60 anyways!

Whats the stock stall speed of a converter? I drove a cam only trans am today and it didnt have a converter. It just moved so i really had to have my foot on the brake. Got a friend who makes converters and he said he can make me one for 50 bucks but he sells them for 3xx. What do you guys think? What would be the minimum i can have so my car wont move in a red light? My friends stall is only 1800 to 2400. All comments and opinions r welcomed. Thanks in advanced. Antonio.

Stock stall is something shitty like 1800...

I would avoid your friend's $50 converter..haha
Save up and get something good.

I have a Yank SS3600 and it drives stock-ish. If I wasn't lazy I'd take it out and have it restalled to a SS4000...

Definitely get a 4000 stall.

I know the 50 dollar stall is not a good invesment but im in need of a car and i cant wait to save up. Just wanna know how long my tranny would hold, and if a 2400 stall would make somewhat difference than stock. I dont think my tranny will hurt if i do only rolls. I have street tires so a race form a dig wont be to my advantage unless i just wanna spin all dam day. Thanks for the info guys. Any more info and opinions r still welcomed. Thnk Antonio.

Do the converter first. Definently. I have a yankss3600 in mine, and it is my daily. I love it, but wish I would have went with the 4000. I am gonna get it restalled this winter.

Yeah, i did the stall (ss4000) and am about to do the f13 cam from futral motorsports. I've been researching this stuff for five years since I bought my car all stock and it would be counter productive to cam it first as u wouldn't be able to use the new found power. Plus stalls are bitchin in and of themselves!

I called Circle D and told them about my daily driver and what I expected at the track. They recommended the 3000 full size, lock up, stall converter I bought from them for less than $400. At the time I was lid and cutout only for mods and with a tune my 60 foot improved from 1.9x's to 1.7x's and my quarter mile improved almost 4 tenths. Then I installed the 226/226 cam with supporting mods and the car drives like stock with the 3000 stall. No surging at all and just under 30,000 miles on this setup with the stock transmission and stock 10 bolt.
