Default 4000+ stall owners...Need tuning advice

I just put in my PT4400. This converter rocks I'm on 3.23's and it's not too loose for me but my pcm is tuned for a 3500 so I obviously have some tweaking to do. My lockup is set at 47 mph now at partial throttle but I'm thinking of lowering this so I'm not driving around town at 2700. I'm also planning on bumping the line pressure up a bit because I can't even feel my shifts.

Can you guys give me some of your settings on line pressure, lock up, partial throttle shift points, etc. Or anything that will make it a tad more drivable.

Raise all your part throttle shifts between 6% and 50%:

1-2 +2 mph
2-3 +3 mph
3-4 +4 mph

You can tweak them after you drive around bit on those settings.

I keep it in D around town. Have it Lock up between 30 - 35, pretty much as soon as you shift into 3rd.

Thanks, I'll try that

Do you get any cam surge from that low of a lockup?

With my car I did pretty much what Ragtop just said. However I sometimes don't use D around town because the cam surge in my car gets pretty nasty at times.

When I get a chance I'm going to make a detailed thread of the things I've done to tame my SS4000. I played with it ALOT before I got it just like I want it.

I've been driving around in 3rd now instead of OD and it makes a hell of a difference. Instead of needing 47 or to so lock up, it does it right at 35. I still need to mess with the partial throttle shifts and line pressure.

Colonel's post will be informative but remember what works for one person is not perfect for the next. A 4000 stall is not magic. Some people think it is loose; others think it is no big deal. Different cams, gears, and driving styles means you should really experiment with your settings. That's why I give starting point suggestions.

I drove around with ATAP displaying speed and TPS to see at what TPS and speed I wanted the converter to lock at, and what speed/TPS I want downshifts to occur at. For example, at more than 33% TPS I want the car to downshift out of 4th to 3rd at speeds below 60 mph. Just take a drive and make some mental notes and experiment.

Yah, that's true for sure. I don't think my 4200 is all that unstreetable. It's hardcore, but I drove her everywhere for quite a while and it didn't bother me really. Yet, I have my friends tell me that they would never be able to tolerate the converter being that loose in thier cars.

i have an SS4000 in my Vette it is pretty Tight but I am gonna tweak the driveability issues with LS1 Edit. Had an SS3600 before it is looser than that for sure, but not too bad.

Sorry I'm being so slow about giving my programming details but this is something I want to really explain in detail. Gotta be in the right mood (lot's of coffee and nothing better to do.)

Like Ragtop said though, my setting will not be the best for everyone, or even most people, but they will give you a good idea of what to change and how to change it. Your preferences, converter, gearing, and cam selection may make your best programming a little, or alot, different than mine.
