What Stall ??
This weekend I went to the track and my car broke. I heard a terrible noise after a run and decided to baby it home after getting it to the shop we found out I cracked my flexplate and starter. Since I am going to have to open the transmission up I think it may be a good time to throw in a stall converter . My car seems to run exceptionally well for being a bolt on only car with 2.73 gears and I have considered a gear swap but love the top end and am leaning towards the stall. I have already searched and found some useful info but am wanting some quick advice on this one while it's sitting in my buddies shop waiting. My car has lid, Lts , a diablo , few suspension mods and is basically a good running light bolt on car on street tires. I have 315 wide street tires NOT drag radials although YES I know they would help I will continue running street tires daily and for quite a while into the future. My car already spins a lot and yes I know the stall won't help with that. I am just wanting to know what you guys with similar setups would recommend and have ran. I have a set of 3.42s laying around but want to try the stall with the 2.73s first. I am considering about a 3200 .... Any input is appreciated sorry for the long post haha

I think i'm going to get a 3200 and basically have your goal in mind a street car, most people on the site advised I get a 3,600 but I just think that is more race than street. I also have some 3.42's waiting to be put on when I get to it. I would think it'd make a good difference and I really don't think you'd lose enough top end to really care about.
I got all of the induction stuff I could get along with a ported throttle body and its a big difference. I kind of felt it was a waste of money untill I got the cold air/ ram air piece installed, but then it came alive lol
If your going to buy new I would suggest yank for the brand of converter from all i've read. You get a warranty and a quality part from them.

Yeah I am waiting on the 3.42s to see how bad I spin .... I like the top end and gas mileage I am getting just want to get into the power quicker and through more of a range. Idk about going 3600 + .... It is a bolt on only car for now. I am guessing that I will also want it to be a lock up and am not so sure about the anti ballooning plate being necessary. Did those of you with those bigger stalls ever run them with as small of gears as 2.73s or know how sluggish it may feel ?

What gas mileage are you getting? Just curious im down to around 15 and 16 in the city but I don't drive it as nicely as I could.
I haven't really been in any stalled cars so its still too hard to imagine 3600-4000+ in a daily car. I wouldn't abuse a manual that bad lol
Whatever you go with im sure it'll be fun lol

I am throwing codes from no cats n 02s but before that and when I have the codes deleted I get mid 20s .... Majority high way but I still think it is pretty good . I am leaning a little toward the circle d 3000 - 3200 lock up not sure about it having anti balloon plate though. That should still be pretty streetable with my baby sized gears shouldn't it ?

I guess knowing that I could justify the 3,600 or 4,000. I previously thought the lock up converters actually ment you hit that rpm before the car moved really.. Kind of still would be the downside if you wanted to play with someone without launching that hard I guess.
What am I talking about, there's been like maybe 3 cars ive played with here. Its pretty dead car wise here.. I guess there's enough cars at the shows and at kcir but its just dead as far as drivers I guess.

I had an A4 2.73 and went with 3.42s and a CircleD 3200 at the same time I did Pacesetter LTs and my car is a totally different car in a good way. I lost about 2 mpg in all around dd but the seat of the pants difference was awesome. I to enjoyed the top end but I have ton of fun now from stop lights and slow rolls and need to aware of what type of surface I'm on before nailing it. The smile factor is very important. I also went from 16x8 to 18x9.5 wheels and still can smoke them at will.
Some shops\manufactures will restall your convertor one time.
I don't doubt that a 4k stall would make me grin bigger but I'm happy with my CircleD 3200 for now in my dd in Houston rush hour traffic.

You can still pull great gas mileage once your locked up and the highways .. go with a 4k...

1972 z28 I am considering a similar setup to what you have . So you are saying drivability didn't change much ? Also you said you enjoy going from slow rolls like I often do. How does the convedrter effect those ?

Drives about the same, pulling away from a stop RPMs are higher than normal which results in fly-bys by ricers lol. It drives like stock for the most part and will boil the tires from a dead stop and like stated above have to be aware on what type surface I'm on before flooring it especially at 20-30 mph or I will end up sideways. The streets are probably the same in your area with a mix of asphalt and concrete some slicker than others. I've been happy with it.

You would defenitely want a 3200 stall at the least. Most aftermarket converters require the use of a 3.73 gear ratio or taller but I run a 3600 stall with a 3.42 gear ratio and a trans cooler. Just remember to install a cooler.

Yes I will install a cooler at the same time. I already have traction issues on the 315 wide sumitomos on most streets roll or stop anyways that is why I wanted to stick with the 2.73s for a bit longer .... My car runs very good for the little bit of mods that it has opposed to others that I have seen . I have some 3.42s but want to see how my car reacts first .... Would 3200 be a good set up for a car on street tires ? Also I have a diablo on my car now will any other tuning be required ? Thanks for the responses so far !

just an fyi your going to want to put some good tires on the car after or before the stall or else your just going to blow through them once you get the stall in. ask me how i know lol.
