The first gear on the 4L80E isn't quite as deep as the -60E, and the overdrive isn't quite as shallow either (.75 on the -80E vs .70 on the -60E) however this could all be a good thing if it's what you want. The -80E is a "closer ratio" transmission. With the -80E, I think you'll have a shorter gap between 1st and 2nd, and the OD won't feel quite as severe as a 4L60E running somewhat shallow gears. (Sometimes when cruising in overdrive you have to push the pedal down more than you want to get it to downshift.)
I don't really know much about the effects of parasitic loss... would any of that be fixed by a smaller converter? The one on the -80E is a monster...
