Question 6L80/90E vs 4L65/70E vs 4L80E Debate

OK guys...I've seen over the past few years a lot of debate over which electronic automatic transmission is the best for XYZ reasons on various forums.

As far as I'm concerned each transmission has it's pro/con. Further I believe that each transmission can be an equally suitable solution for 75% of intended applications. However, decisions are ultimately made based on bias, misinformation, or assumptions...good or bad.

So I'd like to start a fresh thread and train of thoughts that separate fact from fiction, opinion and speculation with those in the know.

What is your preferred transmission for a multi-purpose vehicle and why? By multi-purpose I mean it's a registered, street driven, more likely a daily driver than a trailered race car. If you can, specifically address why you don't like the others (personal bad experience, familiarity, cost, installation issues, driveablity, reliability, lack of aftermarket support, etc.)

I'm most interested in the big dogs... the 4L80E vs 6Lx0E. I've heard a lot of good talk about the 6L80/90E, but never a brute strength/reliability comparison against the 4L80E.

Well built billet 4L80Es can handle 1500RWHP or so, even more with spragless 2nd (coming soon).

They are also VERY streetable, as they came stock behind 6.0Ls and also some Duramaxes.

I haven't seen a 6Lx0E handle more than 600-700 rwhp without blowing up (and these mostly were behind lightweight vettes, not heavy FBodies or GTOs).

Also I have a way to have the PCM control an 80e with a 60e tune (must PM me).

Granted, but that's where I've always figured is where the 6LX0E shines...you don't need to spend $10,000 in motor and suspension FIRST to go fast. You can achieve fast numbers with less HP=less$$

Over in the LSX truck world it seems that a 4l80e swap is the only way to go on even a mild setup...I know it has a taller first gear than a 60/65e and is heavier..The 60e is just junk and so few know how to build them correctly..even though I run a PB lvl2 and am happy thus far..but I hesitate to beat on it ..knowing how weak they are..
-I would love there to be an easy way to do a 6l80e swap...thats the route I will go ...some day

Definitely streetable... Jaguar used a 4L80E variant (from what I understand, a 4L80E in a slightly different case) behind a few of its late V12 models. I think Bentley even used it behind their twin turbo Arnage R.

For what use? Stock Camaro or 1500hp monster? If you have a vehicle with a stock 6l80 or 6l90 that is one thing, but putting one of the new 6 speeds in anything other than what they came in is damn near impossible. They are clutch to clutch transmissions which means the release and engage timing is tricky in a non stock vehicle. Multiply that by the number of gears and you understand why they burn up or break a lot. I think they may figure them out eventually but I am not holding my breath. The 4l80e is good up to 1500hp when built properly. Spend enough on the 4l60e and they hold up OK, but nothing right now can touch the 4l80e's.
