Default drive or OD for track?

I have always run my car in OD. But guys on a local forum are calling me dumb for doing that. They said to run it in Drive, cause OD it will burn up my tranny. . It doesn't go into OD at the track so whats the difference from running it in OD?

With my stock 4l60e I was always told to run in OD. I tried both at the track and OD seemed to have more consistent and better times then D.

However, since I had a 4l65e built by FLT, I was told to always run it in D when racing.

FLT says leave their tranny's in D since they modify the vb so the overruns are on in D. Maybe one of them can clarify that.

But either way your not gonna hit 4th through the quarter unless your running some really short gears, so ask your builder what they recommend. With a stocker it doesn't make a difference.

Ive heard running it in OD is a good way to destroy a stock 4l60e with a quickness. Mine seems to run much better in D anyhow. However like you said im not sure it matters, 4l60e's wont shift into OD at wot i dont think. Ive never tried it honestly lol. I know my 700r4 wouldnt go into OD at wot, i had to let off at the end of 3rd and get back into it.

Always run in D when running a 4L60e or 700R4 hard. First it keeps the transmission from shifting into overdrive at WOT. It also keeps from rolling the sprag when doing 3rd to 2nd or 1st rolling downshifts.

But if your not hitting the mph/rpm in the quarter to make the 3-4 shift should it matter? When you say rolling downshift do you mean roll racing? So if im gonna stomp it at say 60 and my tranny is gonna downshift from 4 to 2, I should first slip into third manually??? Thought manually downshifting was a big no no....

I thought D for the track, burnout too of course. Other than that leave in OD and let the tranny do its job.

Yes when roll racing DEFINITELY drop it into 3rd. Manually upshifting is pointless with an electronically controlled transmissions. Manually downshifting into any gear other than 3rd creates excess heat and kills the over run clutch. Leaving it in OD at the drag strip is not that big of a deal. But some cars are running on the edge of shifting into 4th right at the end of the track. We just tell people leave it in D just to cover all the bases.

Ok thanks for clarifying that. I disabled the 3-4 shift with hptuners at WOT anyway.

Kevin you are right about the vb mod on our transmissions.
D when you are doing any kind of "spirited" driving.

With the 4L60E the overrun clutches do not come on in 3rd gear ("D") shifter position until the transmission is in 3rd gear. When the transmission makes the 2-3 shift, now the overrun clutches come on, robbing critical 3rd gear apply oil. Sonnax makes a valve that fixes this (mentioned by Andy at FLT). When using this valve the transmission now has the overrun clutches on just like the 700R4 does in all three shifter positions (1, 2, 3). With this valve, now you can use "D" without any worry. In stock form, I do not recommend using "D" when drag racing, if you are after longevity. Yes, you can say that I do not have a problem with using "D" when racing, but that does not change the facts of what happens here on how it operates.

wow the discussions are just as confusing as the transmissions. Hopefully Frank from performabuilt will weigh in for us guys who have their transmissions.

there used to be a video online somewhere of a Pewtor LS1 T/A on the drag strip that went past the timing lights and had to back up. He forgot to put the car back into drive and when the light went green he went backwards for a few seconds. You hear the announcer go "And the Trans Am goes backwards!"

What is so confusing?? With a stocker it doesn't really matter. FLT builds their trannys so that overruns are always on with the shifter in 3rd...the reason they say keep it third for ANY type of racing. RPM said the same thing originally. I ran a performabuilt transmission first and don't remember Frank ever saying leave it in third for roll racing to aid the sprag, which is why this is new to me.
