4l60e 4x4 to 2wd
I did a search on this matter and I saw the few posts there are on the subject.
Short story, I bought a 4.8 with the 4l60e from a 1999 truck. It was a 4x4 but missing the transfer case. I thought I only had to change the tailshaft to use it as a 2wd application but I see I got to open the transmission and change the output shaft as well.
Right now I have much more time on my hands than money.
DOes anyone know where I can find a thread on how to open and reassemble a 4l60e?
I'd like to put that combo in a 1987 CAdillac Brougham and I have been told by a helpful member of this forum that I should use the tailshaft from a 700r4 in order to be able to use a speedometer cable. WHat years should the 700r4 be from?
Is the output shaft from a 700r4 2WD the same as the one on a 4l60e 2wd?
Does it take any special tools to do this job?
Thanks in advance
So let me see if I understand correctly.
If I plan on keeping the 4l60e, I have to buy a tailhousing from a 4l60e, tailshaft from a 700r4 and also that 500 dollars electronic gizmo in order for the PCM to work. If this is right then it it way too expensive for my budget.
My other choice is to find a 2WD transmission for cheap.
Final choice would be to keep the transmission in the car (th200r4 I believe) and adapt it to the engine. I read I have to attach the kickdown cable to the engine in one war or another. What else is there involved? If there is nothing major involved I would like to go that route since the transmission only has 75000 miles vs. 150000 miles for the 4l60e. The 4l60e has also black oil in it. The transmission on the car was very well maintained.
If I keep that transmission will it be able to take the torque of the engine? The engine will be kept stock, maybe eventually add a better cam and headers but I would doubt it.
The 200-4R's can be built pretty strong, but are weak in stock form. For the tv cable you could check out bowtie overdrives or http://www.tvmadeez.com/

Is the 200r4 in stock form strong enough to take the torque and power of the stock 4.8? After everything I read I would say no so it would need a rebuilt.
So the more I think about it, I would rather rebuild myself the 200r4 which is in good shape right now. I understand the big disadvantage is that I cannot change shift points easily, the pan has to be dropped right? Anything else I should know about?
In that case I would buy the kit to adapt the tv cable on the 4.8 and I eliminate the wires that would go from the PCM to the transmission. Is this right?
If later I decide to get more power from the engine can the PCM still be flashed?
Do i have to change torque convertors?
