Which atf fluid is good?
New to the auto scene. Ive owned all manuals in the past. So im looking to buy some new atf fluid for my 4l60e and not sure what is a good fluid. I know i want a full synthetic. I know there is red line, royal purple, amsoil, mobile 1. They are all great names but which holds up the best for the buck. Thanks guys

Secondly, you sometimes have to wait longer than an hour and a half for answers. In this case I would imagine no one wanted to answer because it has been discussed a lot.

We haven't found much magic in ATF. We run standard Dex 3 ATF in everything. We run it in our shop race car and our friend Al's 9.0@160mph C5 Z06 we built from the ground up. I personally wouldn't dump a bunch of money in trans fluid but that is ultimately up to you.

Full Synthetic ATF is better than conventional by a very notable margin. It will increase your transmissions lifespan substantially from reduced wear...but obviously can't stop something from breaking.
Ive been told by a few builders to avoid synthetic in both the T56, and the 4L60e. When i bought my trans from FLT, they specifically said to use the standard Dex 3 trans fluid.
Trans fluid performs hydraulic functions , cooling and some lubrication , And most any will do the job. The only advanatage to synth fluids is they can take more heat without breaking down. But if your getting that hot the fluid is a minor worry since the seals will begin to cook by that time. So at best with the synth you will end up with pretty fluid and hard seals leaking it. If I were gonna spend money I would take the money saved by getting reg dexron and buy a bigger cooler.

I agree Jake bigger cooler and change more often and I dont mean flush just changing the fluid and filter is a great way to increase life and will do alot more than any fancy fluid will.

I am sure that I will take some heat for this but you are living in the stone age with conventional type fluids. There is a reason that synthetics (trans, engine or anything) have a substantially longer change/drain interval. They last significantly longer and protect significantly better.
One motive a trans (or engine, etc) builder would have to try and keep you away from synthetics is because you will be back sooner for a rebuild since it will where out considerably quicker...just sayin'. I wish I would have kept a file of all the testimonials/stories I have read or heard about the value/benefits of changing to synthetics and how much better things are. We could have made a sticky and ended this circus once and for all.
