Default 98 Z28 Tranmission Clink when shifting from R to P

All

My wife has a 1998 Z28 with an automatic transmission. The car has 89k miles on it. When she comes home she backs down the drive way and angles towards the garage. She then has to shift from R to D to pull forward to straighten up and then from D to R to back up and then from R to P to Park.

At each shift (R to D, D to R, R to P) I hear a slight "clink" noise (definitely not a "CLUNK")

It is driving me crazy. Is it the U-joints - and are they servicable?

Thanks

Check the torque arm bushing might be bad.

Okay - are the torque arm bushings servicable or do you need to replace the whole arm? How do you tell if it is bad - grab it and if it moves considerably then it is bad?

AND more importantly, where is the torque arm located?

Its under the car. It run's from the rear end to the back of the trans. Yea you can just replace the bushing. It's very easy..

I truly hate this car - it's my wife's and I drive a Dodge truck which you don't have to put on stands to see under the damn thing.

So I am trying to find this torque arm and just not seeing it. Is it a round tubular arm or is it a c-channel type arm.

Any diagrams available on the WWW that will show me this thing?

See the black thing under the drive shaft? Its got 2 bolts going straight down. Thats the torque arm on the rear end side. Now follow that black thing all the way to the trans and you will see the next pic...

Here is he trans side of the torque arm. See the bolts going through it? Theres a rubber clamshell in there. Its called the torque arm bushing.

Here is the torque arm detatched from the trans.

Heres a pic of how long the torque arm is under the car. This is without my drive shaft or exhaust in place.

I think That should just about do it for you

Yep they say a picture is worth a 1000 words! I had my hands all over it and thought that might be it but couldn't tell without getting out the ramps. I will just order one and replace it regardless as I see they are about $15 or so.

How hard is it to remove the mount on this where the bushing goes?

Its a little tricky if you never saw it before but not hard. IIRC I had to drop the tail of the trans down a bit. Once your in there you will see what I mean.

Also, if I was you I would have someone shift the gears while you listen under the car. Try and get an idea of where its coming from. I really dont think it would be a TA bushing but I could be wrong.

Feel free to bring it by the shop. I'll take a look at it and get you going in the right direction. Just give me a call...
