Default 2000 Trans Am 4L60E quit. Need Advice.

Wife as driving her Trans Am home and while in drive car just quit going. No gear or reverse.

Question is if I buy a used transmission for her car is there any particular 4L60E years I need to look for?

Once installed will computer need to be TUNED to match anything or should everything just plug and play?

Appreciate any advice. Newbie to these computer controlled cars.

John

Appreciate the info... Went out today and checked fluid in tranny... Fluid looked good, no burnt smell and was up about six inches on dip stick. Fired up the engine level never fell on the dipstick.

Before this incident the level was always in the proper range under warm idle conditions.

Thanks for any info...

Yes, your pump rotor is broken...

As JUNK asked...was there any recent work done in the bell housing area?

No sir not that I know of. We bought the car second hand and the guy that owned it before said no tranny work was done. I plan on pulling tranny and seeing what I got.

I may get this one repaired, buy a used one out of a wrecked auto, or rebuild myself just for experience depending what tools I need. Never know till you try it.

If you decide to find a used trans, I would recommend an '03 thru '05, although as stated, a V8 version '98 thru '02 is fine too. The '03 thru '05 have the hardened sun shell and a few other improvements; plug and play, no tune change needed. Just make sure it is for a V8 - the bell housing will have a bolt hole in the 12 O-Clock position.

If you decide to rebuild yourself, there are quite a few threads on rebuild kits and tools; I have posted extensively on each such thread.

And yes, if the fluid level did not go down with the running engine, your pump is shot.

Thanks for all comments... If you got anything else just keep them coming. This is not a daily driver so me doing a rebuild would be a fun challenge. Thinking maybe drop a used one in and just rebuild mine.

When the pumps go out does it usually trash tranny or can you get away with installing new pump? Anyone with experience with that?

Wife said she did not hear anything abnormal. Just a no go when she gave it gas.
