Default 200R4 or 700R4

How come no one uses them anymore ?
I have a 62 Bel Air so I'm not interested in cutting up my floor to fit a massive trans in there.
Right now I'm looking @ the 200R4 for my first choice.

Just curious…………….thanks.

A 4L60E is exactly the same size as a 700R4; basically the same case. If you are controlling the engine with a PCM, you might as well use the 4L60E. Some people that running a carburated LS engine are indeed using the 700R4 or 200R4, but that is a much rarer case.

If I remember correctly, the 2004R is smaller than a 700R4, it is the same size as a TH350.

The downside is most if not all used a BOP bolt pattern, not the Chevy bolt pattern.

you could get a chevy bolt pattern 200/4r in a 83-88 monte carlo ss (I had a few of them back in the day) likely in many other g bodies that had sbc's ( el camino , pontiac 2+2 ,etc...)

200/4r's can be built to take plenty of power they were what grand nationals came with and those guys have the upgrades down to a science , the f bodies got the 700r4's back then which had a uselessy low 1st gear ratio like the 4l60 does

I am of the opinion that the 200-4R when built correctly is ultimately stronger than the 700R4. With that being said, I think the 4L80E is an awesome way to go, but if you do not want to cut the floor, then I say 200-4R.

Most 200-4Rs have a dual bolt pattern housing, BOP and Chevy. I just picked one up I'll be putting in my 79 TA with an Olds 403

I have a 200r in my 83 crossfire trans am. Good transmission as long as you don't beat it to hell. Just like the 700r in my 84 C10 it runs and feels right as long as it's adjusted correctly.

If you're keeping the l33 mostly stock I think you'll be more than happy with the 200r. I assume this will be a cruiser? Make sure you keep all the brackets and TV cables associated with the trans and drive her slow until you get it adjusted correctly and you'll love it.

FYI - the guy I bought my c10 from didn't know how to adjust the TV cable correctly and I ended up getting it for close to 1k(swore up and down the trans was bad). 4 hours of careful drive and adjust corrections and she's been breaking loose in "kick down" ever since. Insurance company appraised it at 12k. Love the truck and would never think about getting rid of it lol

Cool guys.
Ya I'm seriously looking at the 200r4 for my Bel Air and will probably make the jump this winter.
Next summer I will put in the L-33.
The L-33 is no where close to stock so I know I will have to have a healthy 200r4 trans built for it.
Here is a mock up of my engine:

Engine should be 450-475HP.
Right now I'm leaning towards a Performa Built Trans.
I have sent PM's and unanswered phone calls to other "supporting board members" with no responce.

Thanks

I know this is old...but if you go with a Gn tranny....get one from a vendor on turbobuick.com

They have all that shiznit sorted out in the early 90s before anyone had a clue what a GN could tear up
