Default What 4l60 easy upgrades

I am thinking of doing a few upgrades on the 4l60 this winter wanted to make sure I am getting the right things.

seperator plate trans go part number 46-PLT-96 wasn’t sure if this was the right one says it should work for 98 car but figured I would ask the experts.

what shift kit is recommended for the 4l60 trans go hd2?

also have a sonnax boost valve and HD 2-3shift valve planne.

Just looking to to do a few mods that can be done with the trans in the car not looking to rebuild it at some point I will get it built but doesn’t look like funds will be there for this winter point me in the right direction.

Get the transgo SK kit since you're not taking it apart. It costs less because it doesn't have the internal parts that get put in when the trans is taken out. When it (if) it gets taken out those parts are readily available.
That car should have a corvette servo already.
Maybe get aluminum forward and 1-2 accumulator pistons. Maybe D ring seals for the servo and accumulator pistons.

Thanks for the advice do you have part numbers for that stuff? I did some searching found the sk kit pretty easy the other stuff not sure of I did find sonnax kit HP-4L60E-01 that seems like it might have everything but 2-3 shift valve and the separator plate.

Haven’t tried this before so I am trying to lean on guys that have exsperiance.

I did everything you're asking about (hd2, separator plate, sonnax boost valve, hd 2-3 valve). Apparently when my trans was rebuilt when the previous owner had it, they installed the SK kit. Car shifted firm and very quickly. Long story short, the SK kit uses 3 heavy springs in the 1-2 accumulator. The hd2 kit uses one. I spoke with Dana from PBA (pro built automatics) and he prefers the single spring in the accumulator to soften the shock of the shift and hopefully protect parts.

I also drilled the plate to his specs. So give him a call because his hole sizes were quite a bit different from the transgo instructions since I'm running a 4000 stall converter.

I drilled the hole for the hd 2-3 valve and race in D3. Currently spray 150 and will spray 175 next weekend for mid 10s. Car shifts great:

Get torlon check ***** as they won't wear into the plate over time. I bought them but didn't get them in time so they are on the shelf :/.

I've heard mixed opinions on the Torlon check ***** on here. I did mine with the Torlon ones and fingers crossed they last at least as long as the factory metal ones (or rather, the separator plate they beat the hell out of). Some were saying the plastic will wear down over time and that it was better to go with metal and just replace the separator plate as needed.

Dana suggested the torlon when I was speaking with him. I was in the same thought as you and ran the metal as I figured the trans wouldn't last more than a year or two lol. 2 years on the rebuild and the ***** were halfway through a thinner plate than the transgo plate.

The Transgo plate was a pretty universal suggestion, I've noticed. Nobody ever suggests anything but it.

Ford has been using the Torlon checkballs since 1979 in the AOD & AODE transmissions. Before that time, Ford was using a very hard rubber checkball that did wear out. The Torlon checkballs, do not wear out in 700R4's or 4L60E's. I have been using them for a long time now and have never had a problem. Sonnax even recommends or supplies them with their 4L60E kit. If you use the Torlon checkballs on the TransGo plate, then you need to seat the checkball holes first, as the plate is made for steel checkballs. On a very hard surface that is flat, take 4 pieces of writing paper and put the separator plate on top of the paper, and place a .250" - .312" steel checkball over the checkball hole. Hit the steel checkball squarely (a mild whack) with a small hammer, to give the checkball hole a rounded seat for the Torlon checkball to properly seat. This is very easy to do. Otherwise the checkball holes from TransGo are not very round to start with. The steel checkballs make their own seat quickly, but the Torlon checkballs do not. For the feed hole sizes on the separator plate, contact me.

Lots of good info here thanks guys. The more suggestions I get the better.

Hardtop Brian I have followed your build some should have a similar set up to you for next season so definitely want to see what kind of durability you get out of those mods.
