Exclamation catastrophic failure of 4l60e tail housing?

Previous tail housing was swapped over to a new 6.0 block and rebuilt 4l60e transmission - don't know why the new transmission didn't include tail housing, but that isn't the issue. I replaced the tail housing because the bushing was shot, and the casing around the bushing had cracks.

Put the new housing on - in less that 150 miles, it shattered - just in front of the 6 bolt pattern, pics attached. This is a daily driver 2000 Firebird, not a race car.

Any ideas what could be wrong elsewhere to cause this? Or is it simply a defective housing?

This is not a racer - really just a daily driver.

Torque Arm is putting alot of stress on that, or your Transmission Mount is bad with excess play.

I had one do that. Had bad wheel hop, torque arm vibrated the tail shaft housing. Relocate your arm from off the tail housing

Obviously I'm trying to prevent this from happening again - find root cause, but I just dont know where to look. It all seems fine ... to me, but I'm just a DIY guy,. WHY would the torque arm put that much stress on it? Torque arm is stock ... recent changes were replace rear shocks, add control arm relocation bracket (this is a fix up car - tires are a bit too big and it had a bit of wheel hop) and replace control arms. The transmission mount and the cross brace looks good, no play - and all was torqued to spec. This failed in 150 miles of around town and freeway driving.

Wheel hop is the Great Destroyer! I have had it break transmission, diffs and driver shafts. If you have wheel hop you will need to get that shorted out.

I would also check the driveshaft u-joints. Could also be a very bad pinion angle. I would think that you would have a vibration with a bad u-joint or misaligned pinion angle.

Yea - that's why I am puzzled - wheel hop was fixed (new shocks, new control arms+ relocation brackets) BEFORE the new housing + bushing was put on. U-joints looked great. 1 week of daily driving to work - 150 miles. No "high stress" driving and then rolling down the freeway and BANG..

/Still relocating the torque arm off the housing as part of the repair ...

Sometimes vibration harmonics comes into play, but I don't see that being the factor here. Maybe something in the back isn't lined up correctly and causing excess force on the Torque Arm. Relocation is definitely worth it, my Fbodies were T56 cars and it was nice when the shifter didn't move up and down.
