Does anyone have a link to some good converter install guides?? I had some great ones saved on my computer, but lost them all when my computer took a crap

just make sure yours doesnt end up like this.... had to weld this to it to get it out once the head got stripped out on the inside

what bolt is that? how did that bolt break like that

 

that is a long bolt welded to the TC bolt just to get it out. the Allen head was stripped out

 

Tip that isn't in that install document. Put like the top 4 bolts in the bellhousing before raising the tranny into place. I'll look tonight at the size of the allen bolts, I think maybe 5/16ths.

 

if your talking about your 02 it normal bolts on the converter.

yeah go to a tranny shop and get the clips that go on the cooler lines. They like to fling out. lol...

 

I would buy 1 extra one just in case. The next time I do it once the clip is started I'm going to try putting a towel over it to keep it from flying. Both of my went flying but we found them then I bent one trying to re-install it.

Something else that was pretty handy were the extensions we had. I used a 24" ,two 10", and a 6" extension but it was much easier with a long one and a whole bunch of 3" extensions. It just gave me that slack to bend around a little bit and it was a big help. I also put masking tape around the swivel when putting the bolts back in so it didn't keep flopping everywhere.
The only other things I can think of right now are the E-clips on the line, you're gonna have trouble with these if you've never done them before. Just be patient and keep messing with them. I found it helped to take the heat shield off the floor board on that side. It's only 5 bolts and it cuts the **** out of the back of your hands. The other thing is getting it off the pins. You'll have to work at it a bit to get it off the pins but it will come off.

 

What exactly are these E clips? where are they at? how many are there? what do they do? and how do you take them off? are these like quick release tabs you would find on a fuel line?

 

They secure the tranny cooler lines to the tranny. There's a plastic disc that covers them up. Slide that back and you'll see the clips. Take a small screwdriver and just get them started out then use your hand to get them the rest of the way. They will want to spring out of there so be careful. You'll see what I'm talking about when you get to that point. They fit in a groove that has little slots in it and the clips slip down into those slots. It'll take you a bit to figure them out but you'll get them. They just take a few minutes.

Don't forget to replace the front pump seal while you have the tranny out.

It's a $5 part and wouldn't it be foolish to pull the tranny do the swap and then have to turn around and do it again because you didn't replace a $5 part the first time? I know how foolish it is because I've had to do it.

 

Where can I buy these e clips if I loose one?

 

I have never pulled those clips out. I just wrench the cooler lines off. The bolts if they are allen is a 8mm. I know because I had to buy one just for that job. I replaced them with normal torque converter bolts to save future hassle. Have a friend help you and it will cut down on the time big time. Make sure to keep twisting the converter till it seats all the way on the input shaft.
