This right here is the reason why you want the SY3500. I have it and I love it. Traction on DRs is great on the street, and it’s really not that loose at all as long as you have 3.23s. I’ve never driven a ST3500 though, but I’ve seen guys try to launch with those. Unless you have some ET Streets you’ll never grab on the street with a ST3500 and 3.23s or bigger.

[raise hand] me [/raise hand]

The SY 3500 will be eaiser to launch on the street because you can step further into the throttle before you spin the tires. You can learn to master it quickly.

I was able to launch the ST 3500 on the street with 3.23s pretty well, but it took more practice. It would take more practice to do it with 3.73s, but again you could do it, just not as easily as with the SY 3500.

The ST will be a little tighter, but it is not a night & day difference.

I still like that converter a lot. Its only fair for track use, but the bigger diameter seems to result in fewer of the small issues that surface with 9" converters.

Yes, driven both, I would not recommend the SY over the ST in any situation but one. Bracket racing. On hot & sticky DR the SY-3500 is nearly a dead hook.

For ANYTHING else, I suggest the ST-3500.

btw, just for comparison... my TP-4400 didn't feel much looser than than my SY-3500 on the street. The low STR makes the SY feel much looser than it is.

I drove Super Yank 3500 serial number 001. As a matter of fact, I came up with the name, LOL! Back in January of '99, this converter made me "King of the Hill" among LS1s. It was the baddest of the bad.

A lot has changed in 3 years! Yank has proven that a converter with a high stall torque ratio can have efficiency that approaches the awesome Super Yanks.

In my opinion, the 9" Super Thruster 3500 trumps the 10" Super Yank 3500 in the following areas.
1. Driveability. The higher STR feels tighter in stop and go traffic.
2. 60' times. The ST3500 is 2 tenths faster in the 1/4...PERIOD!
3. Top-End racing. Even though the Super Yank is the rwhp champ, the lighter weight, longer shift extension and good efficiency of the Super Thruster make it better when racing from a roll.
4. Cost. The Super Thruster 3500 is $725 vs. $895 for the Super Yank 3500.

The SY3500 is better in these areas:
1. Launching on the street with radials or at tracks with poor traction.
2. Putting down more rwhp on the chassis dyno.

Take the pros vs. the cons and let your wallet decide. For what it's worth, 11 converters later, I'm driving a ST3500. That should tell you something.

I've never driven with the SY. LOL I've never driven with a 3500 anything until I bought the ST3500. I agonized because people said it wasn't too hot from a roll, but I beg to differ with that. IMO, this thing pulls good on the highway, but with the 2:73s I can catch 2nd pretty easy.

Well I haven't driven both but I weighed out the options, price came into play and I wanted the better performance so in the end... needless to say... I ended up with the ST3500...

Track results... I gutted the cats, added SLP MAF and converter of course, shaved 8 tenths off the quarter mile ET!

I haven't driven either , so feel free to ignore my opinion, but I have been debating between both of these converters for a long, LONG time.

Here's my take after reading many, many posts on the matter:

*SY3500 will be a little looser than ST3500 due to lower STR.

*ST3500 will out 60ft a SY3500 by a tenth or two, but SY3500 will be catching up by end of track. ST3500 will ET lower (a tenth or so) if traction is up to it.

*SY3500 easier to launch, especially on the street. Drag radial OK for SY3500 even at the track, but ET Streets really needed for ST3500 at the track.

*Serious Drag racers consider SY3500 wimpy! and may make fun of you...

*ST3500 is cheaper than SY3500.

*Some people have issues with lockup, throwing codes with ST3500. I have NEVER heard of people with SY3500 or ST3000 (ST3500 with stall reduced to 3000) haveing these problems. PonchoFan seems to be the biggest cheerleader for getting an ST3500 with the stall reduced to 3000. He says he has no issues and nice performance boost. At first I thought he was crazy reducing his stall that much, but now after seeing many people have issues (not locking up, throw codes, etc) with the ST3500, I think he might be on to something.

*I have been reading these board for over a year and a half, and only recently heard of these issues with the ST3500, but they seem to be fairly common. It's like it came out of nowhere. I used to hear how great the ST3500 was but now I hear things like "Oh, yeah the thing wont always lockup and you need to keep it in 3rd when driving around town.

*I think both are great improvements over the stock converter.

Default Who here has driven both a ST3500 and a SY3500 ?

I would like to know how they differ in ride quality and how different they react compared to stock driveability. I'm pretty sure that I'm sold on the SY3500 but just wanted to know If anyone has driven both and what their thoughts are.

BTW 99% of my driving will be on the street as I only go to the track about 4 times a year.

Thanks in advance

Red: Nice summary, but I disagree in 2 areas

IMO, the SY will not catch up much with the ST at the track. There is not enough extra gain on the top end to pick up a .1

At a decent track, the ST 3500 can be hooked with nittos. I did it and I know of others cutting 1.6x on them. ET Streets makes life easier at poor tracks.

I'm going to try and launch my car on Nitto's this Sunday at HRP. So far I have only ran it at the track on ET Streets and cut a 1.604 60 ft.

The ST is a much better converter to go with, if you care about running good numbers at the track. If you just want to have a stall converter and never really use it, the SY is better.

Why does everyone think this way? Am I the only one that ever gets good launches with an SY?

I cut a 1.69 on BFG DRs @16psi at a pretty bad track as my best. I got regluar 1.7Xs last year too. That was with stock internals, stock T/A weight, just DRs and bolt-ons with 3.23 gears.

While I did see guys at my mod levels last year running a consistent tenth better 60ft than my SY, they had to be on slicks to hook. DRs worked perfect for me, and hooking on the street is real easy.

I’ll be the first to admit that the ST will probably give you 1.5 to 2 tenths over the SY at the same mod level, but when it comes to the track that I go to, if you’ve got anything beyond an SY you have to have slicks to hook.

The SY has worked great for me. I’ve never had any issues with it, and it got me into the 12.6s with stock internals, stock weight, stock gears, and stock manifolds.

You’ll never here me bashing the SY. It’s been great to me.

And not that it really matters at this point, but the SY 3500 should be better from a roll while the ST 3500 will obviously be better off the line assuming you can hook with it.

Without a doubt, go with the SY 3500 since your car is primarily for street use.

RPMWS6 - My 1.7 with the ST3500 was also at 3,100ft altitude. It went from a 2.1 on Drag Radials to a 1.7 after the converter. It made a gigantic difference. Just my opinion, but I'd buy an ST and save the extra money. With the lower STR of the SY3500 drivability is even worse than with the ST to my understanding.

"BTW 99% of my driving will be on the street as I only go to the track about 4 times a year."

2000SuperZ, you'll probably find that you'll be going to the track more often after the converter... I've been once so far with mine and it is a whole new level than it was before... so much fun!

I've got a Super Yank 3500 and am very happy with it. I never go to the track, and this is my daily driver. I noticed the looseness at first, but to me, it was not nearly as bad as what I was expecting. Sometimes I even have thoughts of ugrading to a TP4000.

Havent driven both, but my buddy has a 99 z with 3.23 gears and a st-3500. When we race and he gets traction, I win. When he doesnt get traction on his nittos, I win. This is on the street, as I rarely ever go to the track. I can defiantly launch harder than him with the 3.73 and sy-3500 combo. I pull about 1/2 a car on him right off the line and almost a full car after we hit around 60. By 110 im a good 2-2.5 cars up on him. There could be a lot of things that affect who wins and loses here..but with 3.73's and sy3500 I definatly hit just as hard as he does. Love this converter, but for the money with stock gears..st3500 is the way to go. On the street with a bigger pocket for some gears and higher priced converter, the sy3500 + 3.73 is hard to beat. Hope this helps.

So, 10 people that have owned both, or driven both these converters say get the ST-3500... your summary says guess I'll go with the SY? I don't get it...

I would be willing to place $$$$ on, that a ST-3500 would pull a SY-3500 from a roll. A 9" converter flat out spins faster, easier.

You'll also notice that everyone that talks about owning a SY, has ethier upgraded or thinking about it... I wonder why? Hmmmm

BTW: I repeat, had one, loved it, but had to upgrade.

No complaints with my ST3500... I'm cutting consistant 1.6 60' times on Nittos (1.62 was the best).. Thats with only bolt-ons and a 3.23 gear. My buddy had a SY3500 in his car and it wouldn't 60' nearly as good. Guess thats why he upgraded to a TP4400.
