Do I have to change the stock shift points with 3.73 gears on my A4?

And if so, do I need a hypertech power programmer 3 to do that?(currently have 3.23's)
Keep in mind this will be on a bolt-on car only.

trial and error man. when you get it to the track, play with it if you can. that's the best way. you may have to up the 3-4 shift quite a bit so you don't go into overdrive at the end of the track though. i'mnot positive.

Interesting. But assuming I don't go to the track much, will the stock shift points be ok for around town and the highway or will this cause problems for my transmission no matter where I drive my car?
Just trying to learn a little about this stuff.

You definitely need some way to tell the pcm the gearing is different. An HPP3 would be handy for that as well as shift points.

Changing the shift points with HPP3 will not affect part-throttle (around town) driving. It only affects WOT shift points. When I Autotapped my car after installing the 3.73's, I saw that my 1-2 shift was only at 4500 rpm!!! I now have my 1-2 shift point at +5 mph, and my 2-3 at +2 mph. You'll have to either get HPP3 or custom tuning to calibrate the computer for the gears.

Kristi, are you running a stall and if so what size?

I consider the SLP thing to be such a waste of money that I forgot to mention it

If you are not running it at the track, then you dont need to change a thing, although the speedo will read an average of 10 mph faster (mine does). The hypertech would be nice though, you lower the shift points.
When I went to the 3:73 gears from 3:23, I kept hitting the rev limiter on every gear, under WOT, finally I figured out that keeping the car in 4th fixed that problem & everything was smooth sailing. I guess it makes the car "short shift" just enough to keep if from hitting the rev limiter. My car shifts into 4th gear the EXACT moment that I cross the line, it couldn't be more perfect.

Thank You. That was the exact kind of information I was looking for.

Keep in mind that this info may not work out exactly in your car, because I run a Vig 3200, 26" tires, & cutting 60's an average of 1.52. I'm getting to the end quicker than most. Your car might shift into 4th sooner because off diferences in the mods mentioned above. Good luck.

Yes I will correct the speedo when the change is made and play around with the shift points if needed(HPP3).
Thanks Again,
Mike
