Default Could an underdrive crank pulley cause a converter unlocking problem?

You may remember a post I made about my Vig having some unlocking problems, after having no problems the 6 months prior. It still does it, it's not too bad, but it still exists. I thought maybe it was the colder air. Well, the last 2 days it's been up to 80 degrees and it has unlocked a couple of times. This got me thinking. A couple of days before it unlocked the first time I had installed my pulley. Could it cause a glitch in the pcm to make it think the rpm's are higher or something, causing it to unlock the converter?

Probably not the pulley. More likely your MAF ends. Ported MAF ends read less air and less load, hence the pcm sends less trans line pressure to the converter clutch. The warmer the air, the less load the pcm calculates...hence lower line pressure. Make sense?

Yeah, but my MAF ends have been in longer than the converter. And, the air temp doesn't seem to be a factor. It unlocks weather it's warm or cold out. It had just hit me that the problem started after my pulley went in. If it was real bad, I would put the stock pulley back in just to see. In any case, it looks like I will be stepping up to a much bigger converter this month <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

What is your transmission fluid temp when it happens.
Also are you running additional tranny cooler , If so try routing the lines to the aux cooler and then thru the radiator cooler, that way your tranny fluid will always remain closer to normal op temp . That is if you are running a cooler.

It was told to me that if your tranny fluid is too cold it would not stayed locked.

I've been through the trans temperture issue. I put a cooler on it when the converter went in. It all comes down to.... why would it start unlocking now when it was fine for 6 months??

As I told you before ,it's the Maf ends. The reason is as Patrick stated above.I know you had them in for a long time before the converter started unlocking,& so did I,but for some reason the unlocking problem starts after they're in for a while.I think the PCM has to see a certain set of parameters a certain # of times,& it will then start to unlock it.As soon as I pull them out,the unlocking problem goes away.I've now gone back to stock ends & am using the Maft to get the O2 readings & timing I want.Guess what? NO unlocking problems.

So AFTICA, does that mean you're not using Ira's device anymore?

After everything I've been reading here about converter unlock problems, I'm definately going back to a stock MAF.

Hi Rich, I'm still using Ira's device. There are 2 types of unlocking problems, one caused by the HPP3 trying to correct for gear ratio,& one caused by the maf ends. The hpp3 problem is a lock, unlock then lock again. That was cured by Ira's speedo corrector. It's still working great. The problem from the maf ends is an occassional unlock while cruising.Going back to stock ends cures that.

Thanks man. I just put my stock MAF back on. So Hypertech still hasn't come up with a fix for the L-U-L problem huh? Pretty sad.
