"That car's hot, man... oh wait, too bad it's an Auto..."

Personally, I was originally looking for an M6 car when I was hunting for my LS1/LT1 F-Body. I always knew what the A4's were capable of and respected them, but I just could never see myself in one because I figured it just wouldn't be as cool or fun riding around in an Auto.
I was wrong, very wrong, this is my 3rd or 4th week with the car and I absolutely love it with the A4. I just kind of laugh inside when people are like "aww, shoulda got a stick in it" or "i loved it until you said automatic blah blah blah". The people that don't show respect to the Automatic cars are the one's that don't know what they're talking about. Most people like that I just don't waste my time with, I just laugh it off and keep rolling.

Good point silkey. Another thing I forgot to add was that even though the 4L60E is fully computer controlled, the TH400 is not. So these guys running big HP cars do have to interact with the transmission by upshifting themselves. The only difference is they do not need to use a clutch pedal.
But it still takes the driver to shift and keep an eye on the rpm's so you're doing it right when it needs to be shifted. That's plenty of control IMO. If I really feel the need to work out my left leg I can always join a karate class, Yoga or take up jogging.
Seriously, this does not mean the manuals have no technology in them either. The T56 is a very strong and modern transmission. For the road course I would want this with a spec 3 clutch but for drag racing I would want a TH400 with transbrake. It's not a matter or right or wrong. It's just a matter of picking the best tool to do a particular job.

Wow...this thread started in January 2006 and it is still going strong! Interesting arguments. I've owned both M6 and A4 cars, and it really comes down to personal preference. Manual cars are fun to drive until you get into traffic and have to keep mashing the clutch in -- especially with a bad knee. A4 cars are effortless and can be a lot of fun as well.
Still, there is nothing like doing a huge power-brake when the idiot in the mini-van behind you at the stop light crawls up until his front bumper is just millimeters from the back of your car. The look on his face when he rolls the windows down to get all the tire smoke out of his van is priceless...![Devil](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_devil.gif)

autos are great for daily drivers. manuals are great for fun/toy cars.
theres nothing more rewarding than shifting a manual car well, especially around a road course.
for drag racing though, sure, auto is better, that way all you have to worry about is getting off the line and pushing the shifter a couple times.

It's more than just that... a properly selected stall converter (to match the cam) makes the car quicker than a manual car with the same mods.

I really only think that high schoolers and import people that need manuals to get any power to the ground think that an auto can't be fast. All it takes is riding in a high stalled auto or a transbraked turbo car to make any non believer a believer.

Funny -- I read several pages of this thread the other day, then two nights ago some dude in his mid-40's (guessing) was checking out my Z and made a comment about it being an automatic. I was polite and asked him what he drove. His response: "I don't have a car right now."
I should have commented that the bus he rides everywhere has an automatic transmission. Instead, I just got in my car and drove away. No time for morons.

I've heard the "ah it's an automatic" comment several times. My response is usually "yep, it's a slow auto, let's race."
My car has a Yank 3600ss and 4.10 gears. It's a fun car, but it's not as fun as a t56 car, imo. I'm planning on swapping to m6 not to please the a4 hating douchers, but because I want a fun street car. If I raced at the track all the time, I would leave it a4, but I just don't.

I dunno ... I have both and I don't really consider the M6 to be more fun on the street in general driving. For example, with tuning, shift kit and stall, my 1-2 shift is always firm and instantaenous with very little rpm drop. With the M6, unless you're driving hard, it takes time to row through the gears and more time for the revs to build back up. You feel the car slow up while you shift. I like them both, but when it comes down to it, I give a slight nod to my tuned/Transgo/Yanked A4.
