Default New Converter Hitting Rev Limiter 2nd to Drive Shifts, Help!

As the title says I am hitting the rev limiter at the top of second gear. It bounces off of it and then shifts into drive. I had a 2800 satll in it and now have jumped up to a 3800 stall. I have never had these problem before. I just had the converter installed yesterday. It doesn't seem to do it first to second shifts, just second to drive. The first time it didn't feel like it wanted to shift.

Has anyone heard of this happening before and what is the fix?

Thanks,

Bill

This is a common problem.
As a result of the looser converter your engine is revving up faster than it use to and with your existing shift point the PCM can not command the shift before you hit the rev limiter. You can either raise the rev limiter or lower your 2-3 shift point.

Find a tuner in your area and get it tuned. Your problems will go away

Yes sir. As said before tune your shift points or raise your redline or do both.

I just wanted to say thanks to all of you for helping out. I was panicing that it was something with the converter and I would have to pay to redo it again. I know the guy that did the install so I knew it wasn't that.

Now the fun begins, finding someone to do the tune.

Thanks Again,

Bill

Default same thing here

TCI 3000 just installed and I am hitting the rev limiter in second. The needle is going just about 6,100rpm and I'm getting sorted of a double shift and it dies back then shifts and it happens right before the finish line!

How much can I safely raise the rev limit by?

I think it must be 6,000rpm now is 6,200rpm ok for a stock motor?

I have a HPP3 I can do this with.

Just to be sure.....double check the fluid level. Since the converter was just installed....might be a tad low. If not, the others are right on. Tuning....

You might be right ... My shift points are 6000 and rev limiter is 6200. I had to raise the shiftpoints a 100-200 rpm but I really can't remember if I raised the rev limiter also or left it alone.

From what's been said so far it sounds like I'm not hitting the rev limiter then!

It is sort like a double shift, I looked at the rev counter and it's a shade over 6,000rpm.

I put the HPP3 on there yesterday and the rev limiter seems to start a 6200 for the first option! I left that stock and dropped the mph of the 2-3 shift by 2mph and increased shift firmness 50%.

I don't have a cable and any tuning software at the moment due to the high cost. I got the HPP3 for $85 so I figured it's cheap and I can use it if I put my 3.73's in to change the speedo.

You can't rely on the stock tach to be accurate - it might read 6000 and actually be 6200 and hitting the rev limiter. Why not raise the rev limiter to 6400 and see what happens?

Ok thanks I will try that next, I have changed the 2-3 shift - 2mph to see if that makes any difference.

Can the the tach be that far off and is it safe to go that high on a stock motor?

Yes and yes. For example, my stock tach shows my shift extension being 4600-4700; autotap shows it 4300-4400. 6000-6200 is not going to be a problem with the stock motor.

Bill what ended up being your problem. I have the same thing happening now. Shift point is set at 5800 and rev limiter at 6800. Still hitting the rev limiter on the 2-3 shift.

do most people need a tune after a converter stall? i wasn thinking around a 3500 stall tuning was not needed. i realize tuning would be better, but i want to be able to drive it w/o tuning and w/o hitting rev limiter

whats your mph set at for the shift, both the mph and the rpm have to be met in order to command the shift

I had it down to 71 mph. Now its back up to 79mph. I was loosing too much power shifting that soon. I just try to lift off the gas to help shift it.
