How much can the 4L60E handle
How much can the 4L60E handle What would be pushing the limits on a stock 4L60E transmission that is brand new from GM.
I am planning on 150 shot, heads/cam. I was going to do heads and cam first then nitrous or vice versa but down the line, it will be both.

well consider stock power pushing it for a 4l60e, thats certainly when mine started acting up... some last with pretty good HP numbers though, i guess its all luck because i cant see much correlation with power and 4l60e life...

It's hard to say. Some of it depends on how you drive it. If you are on the streets and downshifting at WOT often then chances are it won't last long. There is a guy in our club that has a H/C TA with a Yank 4000 stall running 11.2 with his stock trans but it's pretty much a 1/4 mi car only he really doesn't drive it on the street.

With the stock torque converter, the "realistic" flywheel HP that this will hold (assumuing that everything is in decent shape) is around 450-475, and that is with 3.42's - 3.73's in the rear. There are exceptions to this, but from what I have seen over the years.
the 4l60e was not made for racing it was made for fuel economy and driveabilty........there is alot that you can do to this trany but to make it worth a crap you would have to sink about 800 bucks in parts if you did it yourself and around 3000 to have a reputable builder do it.....for this money i would rather build a th400 for about 350 in parts and will hold just about whatever you put through it....reason being the th400 is all shaft operated and the planets are in the rear of the case (no crappy sunshells and front and rear planets) also the 400 has a center case support which supports the shafts to keep them from bowing under high torque something the 4l60e doesnt have.......also pick up a 4l60e and a 400 and throw them up on the bench and see which one hurts your back the most......the downfall of the 400 is it takes alot of power to turn it just like the c6 it takes about 40-50 horse just to turn the tranny.....anything that i build for racing i build a 400 for it and i do it myself to make sure its done the way i want it done
