Default New FUDDLE Converter - slight rattle / grinding noise ??

Well I just had my TC put in, and around 2K rpms, sometimes i hear a rattling noise... and soemtimes it sounds louder and is closer to a grind.

Now its only been on 100 miles or so - i've only noticed the noise the past 10 - 15, and the noise is not constant.

I highly doubt this is a normal sound of the breakin period, but I figure I would ask. I'm going to check to see if there is anything loose under there that could be causing it. Hard to pinpoint where the sound is coming from while driving, but sounds as if its from the tranny area / firewall.

Any input would be good. Thanks.

Thanks for the input!

Car drives fine / shifts fine. Noise only happens around 1800 - 2k rpm.
Does not matter if in lockup or not. Noise does not happen as much when the car is reved in park. Does not even always happen around 2k rpms when driving.

I'm going to remove the starter and see if a bolt is too long that could be rubbing, or if the converter was installed a bit loose.
Anything else off hand you guys can think of that I can check for? I sure hope its not a bad converter..... Although I think they make more of a bad pump sound when they go bad.

Thanks.

cracked flywheel? exhaust shifted and hitting someplace?

My Fuddle started to slip out of lockup and make a grinding chattering noise part throttle around 2K.. 50 miles later on the highway, with the cruise control on, the converter broke taking the trans with it.

Well with the Speed Inc tune I had it would go into lockup at 55 or so in OD and 45 in D or 3rd. After it was in lockup say 65mph 1800 rpm.. (2.73's in my car) when I'd give it a small amount of throttle like cruising or say going up a hill with the Cruise control on (not enough throttle for the car to take it out of lockup) the RPM's would climb to 2000-2500rpm and make a grinding chattering noise and not put any power down. Then it would come out of lockup hard and would of course then acelerate. Even in 3rd going 65 at 2400 rpm in full lockup it was doing the same. At lower speeds not in lockup it made no noise at all. No way it was a tuning problem either because the Vig 3600 I have now had no tuning changes form the Fuddle and it goes in and out of lockup Perfectly smooth and quiet.

If it sounds anyhitng like what I'm describing I'd call Fuddle up and talk to them (if they are answering phones or emails) to get a new converter. From what I've read the latest converters don't have these lockup problems.

hmmm well the car seems to drive and run fine - shifts gears normally - no slipping, rpm jumps etc. Just the grinding rattling noise. So hopefully its not the converter.

Hopefully today i'll be able to get up under there and check for some things.
Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Well after taking a look at everything.... I simply have no idea.
The torque converter itself doesn't appear to be loose at all.... poking it and proding it.

Doesn't seem to want to make the noise when the car has been stopped for a while. Does appear to be making the noise over a wider range now 1800-2500 rpm. Hard to say. I tuned it so lockup doesn't come on as early wondering if it was that. I also put some of that red tube stuff (sorry not technical I know) that gets rid of transmission chatter in case that was the cause.... hasn't helped so far.

Car is shifting fine - which leads me to believe that the torque converter was defective. Tomorrow morning i'm going to call Fuddle and see what they say, and then also call the well known shop I had do the install and see what advice they offer.

This is very frustrating.

Any update to this issue? I'm experiencing similar with the billet lockup converter on my 6L80.
