Default Is a deep pan needed?

Re 98 A4

I am planning to install a Yank converter. I already have a tranny cooler on the car and was thinking of adding a deep pan. I got the numbers for the GM deep pan and filter kit. However, the local GM dealer want $117 for the pan and $88 for the kit. That's over 200 for the setup. These are Canadian prices. I could not find one used.

For about the same price I can get a B&M cast pan and filter extension. However, I am at about 1/3 the cost of the TC just for a deep pan. Is it really needed?

look up finish line transmission they have the gm deep pan kit with the new filter and gasket for 80 bucks. Call Chuck and he will help you with all your needs. They are a great company to work with.

I think deep pans are more for people that do road racing......

I've been through a few of them and prefer the truck pan
I have on there now. Forget any cooling you think it may
provide (depend on a real cooler). What the truck pan does
is put the pickup an inch or so lower in the juice. This means
hard cornering (like road racing, but also just aggressive
street driving) will not make you suck air if you're down a pint.
On the stock pan (F-body) there is not much depth and down
one quart, you'll notice some weirdness.

A used '02 Silverado pan is what I got and it has a drain plug.
You can forget the $88 "kit" too, should be $20 or so at the
Zone. Just don't buy any filter kit that has a cork gasket, a
stamped pan's sealing boss can cut right through it. Rubber is
good.

Yes a pan is a good idea,
you need the pan to get back to the stock oil volume as with the smaller converter you lost about 2 qts from the system,
so at this point you are really about 2 qts lower than with the stock converter.

Yeah draining is a real PIA with the stock pan. If you run your tranny hard you might want to pull the pan to change the fluid so you can inspect the magnet.
