Default 4L60E rebuild complete!

Right after the latest cam swap, the transmission started feeling VERY LAZY on the 2-3 shift. I had right at 9,900 miles on the car with ~100 1/8- and 1/4-mile passes and many WOT blasts on the street. With the Thunder Shootout only weeks away, I knew I had to get the trans rebuilt quick! A BIG THANKS goes out to Joseph for helping me get this done in short order. After speaking to a few different people, I decided to upgrade to a set of Alto Red Eagle clutches, Kolene steels, and kevlar band. (thanks Colonel!) I already had the TransGo shift kit installed. We did go back in with the third shim, though, since the 4,400 stall softens the shifts up a lot. We ended up replacing the stock plastic accumulator with an aluminum piece; the plastic one was cracked in several places. After the trans was disassembled, I got to see the clutches. They weren't destroyed, but they did have some scortch marks on them from where the trans was slipping.

I've only put ~15 miles on it since the rebuild, but it feels really good around town. You can actually feel the transmission shift gears now. Mike Kurtz @ Century Automotive recommended that we give the "set screw" for the line pressure a 1/3-turn to get it back up to the stock line pressure of the '98-'01's. He said that, for some reason, the factory turned it down ~20 lbs. for the '02's. The shifts feel good, and converter lockup is quicker than before. I'm anxious to thrash on it!

I will keep everyone posted as to how it feels, performs, etc. It looks like I won't get to run the car with the new cam, trans, and suspension pieces until Friday night test and tune at No Problem Raceway in Louisiana. I'm curious to see just how we'll she'll hook on BFG's.

Sounds good Trevor! Looks like Joseph has been pretty busy with your car lately. lol

Look forward to seeing you and your car run at the shootout.

Trevor I think I'm having the same problems you were having with my transmission now..Since the heads and cam istall at Thunder my 2-3 shift has been horrible..The 1-2 really feels good but it seems like I'm hitting the rev limiter on the 2-3.

I've gone as far as having Geoff at Thunder raise my rev limiter to 6800 and lowering my shiftpoints to around 6000 to 6200 but the 2-3 just don't have the snap it use to have..

Geoff suggested the tranny's clutches on the 2-3 are probably going but I don't have near the passes on my car as yours..

I'm still going to run the shootout but hopefully very soon after this event I'll have a local tranny shop take a look at it..

Sounds sorta like yours maybe ??

Thanks

Tim, there is a guy in Houma that builds the 4l60e to a race prep for $550.00. He has a few behind 10 sec cars. One of them being Steve Deviellier(sp) of Performance SS in Plaquemine, La. He also just redid my wifes and we have had 0 problems.

my trans went out last week. i had the cam in there for about 5K miles. never really noticed the 2-3 being sloppy, but at the track, it just stopped holding 3rd

threw a pretty new stock one in for the meanwhile. wow, feels so much better though.

Jason - It's been somewhat of a mad dash to get everything done before the shootout. Joseph helped me some on the cam swap, and he also "helped" get the trans done. I'll tell ya later. The only thing that put me behind was the trans rebuild, but I'll get it all finished by this Thursday. I just have to finish the exhaust setup, install the line lock, swap out the rear sway bar, swap the belt, wheels & tires, put the side bar in, and throw on a coat or two of Zaino.

Tim - Your trans sounds very similar to what mine was doing. Sometimes you have a problem w/ the trans that doesn't develop until you add more HP. The 2-3 clutches are typically the first to go. For $550, I think it's hard to go wrong for a trans rebuild! However, it IS coming from Tiny Tim.

Trevor, mines always been weird on the 2-3. Its just slow for some reason. But its always been like that. At WOT it shifts fine though so i guess im still ok. Just around time the shifts feel lazy, but that may be from not having a shift kit and the vig3600 with 3.23's.

I know I will need one soon, just trying to make out as long as possible. Im sure the 224 cam i have will make that happen sooner than expected LOL

good luck and get some ETs! I may wait till spring before I run again because I want to put the new oil pump in. 41k on the stocker

So this morning after it stopped raining and the roads dried around the place I made a pass and the transmission shifted cleanly but at a very low RPM..(5600)..I then raised it to a +0 and again it shifted cleanly at 5800 RPM all the while leaving it in OD..

So right now I'm letting the car cool and have raised the shiftpoint to a +3 to see what will happen ..I don't beleive in things fixing themselves but somehow this is working great..

See you at the shootout..

Harold - Consider yourself lucky! I'd never make it that many miles, much less on a stock trans, without something breaking. LOL

Tim - You're taking the right approach. I've been told the same thing about the limiter problems, so hopefully yours will pan out w/ out needing a trans rebuild. I'll see ya Friday night or Saturday!

Coach - I plan on running brackets Friday night, yes.

Warren - Thanks for the kind words! Keep your eyes peeled on the drag racing section this weekend.

I might have 2 4L60's for sale....1 is an 80K stocker that works
PERFECTLY....and 1 is an upgraded unit....kevlar clutch packs, shift kit,
etc. If you or anyone else is interested shoot me an email.

Possibly got my Extreme 5 Disc 3800 Vig for sale too. Again everything is
in perfect shape...you can go for a ride in the car now to see how the stock
trans runs and how the Vig 3800 is for daily driving and for
launching....it's a SWEEEEET converter....got a few vids of me crackin ***
with it if you want to see it in "Racing" action.

ONLY reason I'm even thinking of selling is to go TH350 cause I don't have a
lot of confidence in ANY 4L60 to hold over 500hp reliably. Just thinking
ahead this time before I go to HRP and have to get towed home again like I
did when I toasted my Z's 4L60....nothing like launching hard as hell then
have the tranny shift and all of a sudden see 7K rpm on the
Tach....nope...no goooood.

Trevor, you made the right choice on parts. I have a Alto rebuild kit picked out for mine too, but ran out of $$ on the 94 Z28 build. Mine will likely be a little soft with the TR224 cam that is now in it.

Maybe I'll take Tim up on his builder recommendation.

BTW, the car is together. Need to get a few things ironed out (exhaust and pinion yoke), but otherwise it's good. Won't make it to Thunder but hope that someone takes really good pictures and posts them soon.

Take care.

Josey - You might try the parts classifieds section.

Pat - I'm glad to hear that the car is coming along. How much have you gotten done? I wish you could make it to the Thunder Shootout! There are quite a few that will be videoing the complete race, and one of my friends going with me is supposed to be videoing as well. E-mail me next week with your address, and I'll send ya a copy. Keep me posted, too, on the progress of your project!

This trans. rebuild ROCKS! I made my first WOT blast yesterday, and I was grinning from ear to ear! The shifts are much quicker than they ever were before! The 2-3 shift is incredibly quick. The 1-2 is as well, but it's hard to try a 20 punch on the street. It just roasts the Nitto DR's. I'm thinking pretty optimistic for the Thunder Shootout this weekend!
