Why can't I rebuild a 4L60E tranny?
For background on how I killed my tranny with a 422 (yeah, dug ), please see this thread:
https://ls1tech.com/ubb/ultimatebb.p...;f=20;t=001250
Now, for the question:
Ok... I just DON'T have the $$$ for a $2000.00+ tranny, plus shipping costs, at the moment.
I may have a line on another 4L60E to swap in right now... it's just another stock tranny in a wrecked car, for $400.00.
I used to build TH350's with no sweat. Anytime I killed them, I'd go to the junkyard, pick up a core, buy a $100.00 kit, and build it up, then replace the one in my car when it started slipping or just died.
Now, I know the 4L60E is different animal, with electronics and all. But, I was an electronics tech in the Navy.
With mechanic and electronics experience, how hard could it be?
Check out this link:
http://www.levelten.com/store/gm/ite...3_7000_pts.htm
They claim up to 650 ft-lbs torque rating and 800 HP.
Would I be stupid to by this other tranny for $400, swap it in, and in a few weeks buy this kit for $416 bucks and rebuild my tranny. I could have it ready to swap in when this other stock tranny get's killed.
Am I being ludicrous?

Re: Why can't I rebuild a 4L60E tranny?
Assuming you have the tools, a good book, and some time, I don't see why not. Most guys here don't / won't go there.
What gets me is the funky tools needed for working on autos. That's all that keeps me out of them. I'm all for tearing something apart, tho.
As for electronics, all there is in there is solenoids, a temperature sensor, and the force motor. Definitely NOT rocket science. A vacuum modulator might help (instead of the force motor).
Go for it. I rebuilt my T56 (that was cake), and am rebuilding my ST-10 (with a zillion needle bearings in the countershaft, that thing is evil). Have yet to conquer an auto, tho.

Thanks, Andrew -
That's what my friend and I were discussing... the special tools.
If anybody knows what tools I need to acquire for this rebuild and where, I can use the info.
Thanks...

Re: Why can't I rebuild a 4L60E tranny?
As long as the manual you're following has good instructions, I don't see why you can't do it yourself. Afterall, the shop that rebuilds it for you has a nechanic do the work...it's not like these trannies fall out of the sky assembled. The only thing I'd be careful with is the clearances. From what I've heard from the shop that rebuilt my "built" tranny that a certain other shop screwed me on clearances and proper setup is 90% of the success. The difference between a stout "built" tranny and a shitty "built" tranny is usually in the assembly, not the parts. Pick up all the literature you can on the tranny (hell, I'd give GM a call and see what they recommend for reference material...occasionally, they actually prove useful!), and give it a shot. Let us know how it turns out.
If I had the tools, I'd be willing to give it a shot also. BTW, I'd probably pick up that second tranny to use as a core and practice...think of it as a $400 toy.
Good luck with that motor. I've been following your build-up and I'm looking to assemble something similar (probably 409ci with a blower though).

For some one that can't do it themselves, would it still be a good idea to buy that kit and have a tranny shop do it for you? My tranny is slipping under heavy acceleration and causing low dyno numbers, so I figure it's time to start looking for a rebuild/new.

The 2004R is also a good suggestion. It's very similar to a TH-350, and can be built very strong. Though not quite as strong as a TH-400, it would definitely be a hell of alot more street friendly.

Re: Why can't I rebuild a 4L60E tranny?
I think you need every available hard part and tuning of the shifts. My trannie guy resleeved my input drum, and put in a much stronger sungear shell, and added more Borg Wagner clutches. After they did this they tuned the shifting so it shifts real quick but not hard by porting the valve body after they installed the Transgo shift kit.
So I don't think it's much more than just installing parts.

DANG! This High Performance Associates tranny is the bomb! Josh (the builder) does his own "shift mod" work to the valve body (he told me this when I asked does it have a shift kit).
At part-throttle, if you let it rev even decently high before letting it shift, when it does, the car just jumps out. I had to soften my part-thottle programming to manage it some when I am not pushing it (the pogramming is obviously not stock ).
He DID replace weak parts with the best components.
