Gearing questions w/ torque converter
Ok guys I have a bolt-on car with a TCI ssf 3500 2.5 str. w/3.23 gears. The best 60' I have pulled so far is a 1.70 on 275 Nitto DR's. Will 3.73's and 315 Nitto DR's help me lower my 60's into the 1.6 range? How will the 2.5 str. react to the taller gears possibly loose top end? More info on car at http://www.cardomain.com/id/rbainss

Re: Gearing questions w/ torque converter
Yes it would help you pull 1.6 60ft times but then i think your nittos arent going to work to good with 373, traction issue. Man id kill for 1.70 60ft what does your car turn in the 1/4.

Re: Gearing questions w/ torque converter
If your spinning, gears won't help.
If your dead hooking and running 1.70 60fts then gears may help lower the 60ft.
If you are dead hooking and only running a 1.70 60ft.. you don't have a 2.5 STR.

Re: Gearing questions w/ torque converter
I figured I would be getting some 1.6's out of this TC, but I am only seeing 1.71(best) to 1.77. Someone take a look at my mods and see if you can help me please. Stock weight w/3.23 gears.

Re: Gearing questions w/ torque converter
Hate to bring this back up guys, but it hasn't got much better in the 60' department. I have gotten into the 1.6's with the 17x11's and 315 Nitto DR's, but not far best 1.68 60'. I'm not spinning so should I go with the 3.73's or maybe a different converter? The DA on the 1.68 was 2600'. Will the 60's come down as it gets cooler?

JB:
I had no problems running a 3500 ST with a 2.5 on nittos. Cut similar 60' to this guy but with a slightly heavier car.
Bain: Once the weather improves, you'll drop into the high 1.6's. 3.73 gears will make it harder to hook but will cut your ET by .1 if you can hook.

Re: Gearing questions w/ torque converter
How are you stalling the converter at the line? I am running the exact same converter and have pulled 1.61s with it. This was with 3.23 gears. The only difference between my car and yours is that I was making better power as evidenced by my 113 MPH trap speed. I think with better weather you will drop that 60ft some more.

Re: Gearing questions w/ torque converter
I don't recall the rpm. I go off of feel more than anything. It was to the point that I felt the rear of the car rise up a few inches but no more. It wasn't that far from the breaking loose point but not right up against it either.

Re: Gearing questions w/ torque converter
If Colonel's car rose then maybe rear suspension
was improved and let more immediate push happen?
Squat / hop would indicate wanting some LCA
relocation etc. Drag bag? Other tricks?
Only going to 2300 on a 3500 stall speed converter
says to me you're only playing with it, you are
in fact traction limited at launch and not putting
the converter itself to its limits. So there
might be some left in technique and traction.
I have neither so can't help you there....

Re: Gearing questions w/ torque converter
Man I'm pissed! We had some nice weather(DA 1046') so I went to Bowling Green(Beech Bend Raceway) Sat. and it was packed there 4 hours and got 3 runs. 1st run(felt pretty good)the time didn't print out. 2nd run stalled to 2500 just before tires breaking loose no spin on the launch , picked up my time and this is what I got:
60'____1.715
330____5.108
1/8____7.932@87.21mph
1000___10.393
1/4____12.475@108.44
That's the same times as I was running with a DA of 2300'. The only thing I have done to my car since running better times was change my plugs from NGK Iridium(stock heat range) to NGK TR-6's to run N20 wich was on the 3rd run and I spun bad. I think we are going to have decient weather for Tues. for test and tune maybe there won't be so many people there so I can work on my launch and check out my tuning. If I can't get in the low 1.6's I don't know what to do to get it there.

Re: Gearing questions w/ torque converter
I think that the problem is your heavy wheel/tire combo and the short sidewalls of the 17s. See if you can borrow a set of ET streets on 16" rims and try that. I can brake stall up to 3000 rpms with skinnies on the front with my ST3800 on my ETs.
