Default Any harm in driving with the torque converter always locked?

My SY3500 doesnt seem to lock up when it should and I have been throwing my manual switch to get the job done.

1.Is there any harm in driving around and shifting with the converter locked?

2. Under 15 mph my converter seems to lock and unlock every few seconds (or so), is that normal?

3. Maybe this converter lock/unlock is contributing to my hard 1-2 shift and 2-1 downshift, possible?

I dont know too much about automaic, but I hink that I remember reading somewhere that your gona run into problems with a converter that stalls over 3200 (or maybe 3400) with a stock tune. Something with the computer thinking that the trany is slipping. Im not sure, maybe someone else can shed some light on this.

You should not lock it at too low an rpm otherwise you will mess up the trans. I think stock lockup occurs around 40mph? Anyone remember? I had my TPE4500 locking around 50mph since it was a LOT looser than stock.

I can manually lock it up at 20 mph and up by flipping a switch. Otherwise, the converter will not lock below 60 mph.

Does this hurt anything: a no lock coverter generates megga heat and is also bad for the tranny!

Locking the converter in 2nd or 1st gear can damage the tranny.

Why aren't you locking? misfires?

I have no misfires, the converter just won't lock in fourth at 40 mph, 50 mph,... until 60 mph

Knowing your mods would help.....???

In the PCM section I noticed you saying that locking the converter drops the RPMs by 1500 at CRUISE....that is NOT normal....sounds like some kind of OD problem...

Do you have a ported MAF? This gave me lockup problems.

With no adjustment by ls1 edit, my PT 4200 locks up when the shifter is in drive at 30 mph. In overdrive, the lockup will occur at about 40 mph

When you lock it up the rpms should only drop about 500 or so.

You need to bring the car by a place and have them drive it.

And locking it up at 20mph is too low, factory lockup does not occur until at least 35mph off the top of my head.

DO NOT LOCK IT ALL THE TIME

I had mine locked in 1st gear once (long story) and awoke the next morning to a busted trans cooler (due to increased line pressure, core blew)... but I didn't know it the night before and drove 50 miles...

When I changed the fluid it was a nice brown color and the bottom of hte pan was silver :eeks:

It's an easy way to blow a trans... best bet is to figure out why the converter isn't locking up... or only lock up when up to speed cruising (on expressways and in preferably OD)

As a point of referance, I have a SY3500. Lockup in OD will occur as low as 35mph (stock lockup settings), or as low as 32mph in D (also stock settings). Of course, more throttle input will raise those numbers, but with as little throttle input as possibile, those are my lockup speeds.
