Default No more 4L60E, what are my options 700/200R

Hey guys, who has done an auto trans swap with a trans other than the 4L60E mated to an LS1? Specifically an overdrive trans like the older 700/200R's.

What about the torque converter locking up?
Where did you get your trans?
What about shifting and the electronics?
Will it mate to the LS1?

Any other information is greatly appreciated.

What is this trans going in? A truck? The answer to your questions depends upon what your vehicle weighs and how much power your engine puts out.

Up to a vehicle weight of about 3700 lbs, I would recommend a 200-4R (which I am running without any problems). Over that, then I would go with a 4L80E - which would still be electronic in this case, and would be able to take the heavy weight with no problems.

Are the connections the same between the 60 and the 80? where you can just plug the 80 into the 60's wiring harness. And do the convertors interchange?

I don't know about the 4L80E - though some on this board do know. It is a very heavy duty transmission, but weighs a ton and has lots of parasitic losses.

I do know quite a bit more about the 200-4R since I am running one. There have been several posts about this tranny on this board (do a search).

Here is what I know about the 4L80E so far.

Farmtruc - Your using a Fbody computer right. If so I don't know if it can be made to work with the 4L80E or not. If just the trans section software can be reflashed it might be possible.(this can't be changed with edit) If not you can use the TCI TCU to control it.

In a newer 4L60E truck it requires that the computer gets reflashed with a 4L80E specific program.(like from a 2500HD truck) It is also going to require some custom wiring for the VSS. The crossmember and driveshaft will also have to be modified. I was told it would hold 700 rwtq(my eventual goal one of these days) EASILY.

ALLEN,

I would not change trannies. I have an 83 GMC truck with 517 hp and 576 tq. The truck is full weight (with a/c). I have a 700R4. The 4L60E is the electronic version of the 700R4. The 4L60E will handle your truck's power and weight. The 700R4 or 2004R has a TV cable. The TV cable is very difficult to setup and adjust on an electronic setup. The TV cable can be only adjusted with a pressure gauge to insure proper adjustment. If I were you I would stay with the 4L60E. (IMO)

Thnaks for the responses, i decided to stay with the 4l60e, i found a shop that sells HD parts for the 4l60 and they build them to withstand 800hp, so i think i won't go thru all the frustration of converting to something else.

ya, it's a z28 pcm, so that would be another thing i would have to change, and i wouldn't want to modify the cross member and wiring, i just want to mod, not fix, hahaha
