Default Take me to school, PWM

I believe its pulse width modulation. Can someone tell me 1. what its purpose is and 2. can it be edited with hptuners and how?

Alright, I found this: 5-PWM (Pulse Width Modulation). What is it and how does it affect my car? PWM is the controlled slip of your converter, which basically allows the converter clutch to partially lock at lower speeds to improve fuel economy. However, this generates heat and puts wear on the converter clutch. While this is not a big problem with an OEM sized converter, it is a problem with the smaller 8-9-10 inch converters because they do not have enough clutch surface area, and they can’t absorb the extra heat generated. Nor do they have the friction area for the slip to be properly controlled by the PCM. PWM should be eliminated in any high performance application (and really any application). This function is the source of the code 1870. This function is eliminated on all our transmissions.

Now I just need to know how to get rid of it

I myself would install a transgo hd-2 kit. It comes with a new regulator valve that greatly reduces the amount of pwm function. You also should have some tuning done on your car. Either hp tuners or ls1 edit would be a good choice for software for tuning. Try posting this in the tuning section. You might get a better response there. I am not a tuner and really can not help you. Here is a link for hp tuners web site. http://www.hptuners.com/forum/index.php This might help you as well. Vince

Ok, let me ask you this. My converter will lock up, but if you give it a small percentage of throttle, it the rpms will go up and down. Does this sound like a problem generated from pwm?

It could be a slip in the tcc. Is this something that recently started? If so you might want to have your vehicle looked at.

I would have it looked at. It sounds like you need to have some tuning done.

Tuningis a definate here particulary if you are using a 9.5 or 10 inch converter need to eliminate as much PWM as possible

In hp tuners, to modify pwm, is it TCC DUTY CYCLE? This is the only thing I can find dealing with PWM. I'd assume I'd put the minumum up to the maximum. Is this correct? Right now its at 10 and the maximum is at 96.

Both of them, the minimum to the max and the maximum to the max?

That is my understanding , However I am not a tuner and you may want to ask that in the tuning setion but from my reading here yes thats what you would do

I found a post on the HP Tuners forum. I'll copy/paste it here. It is from someone that does know what they are doing.

PWM is pulse width modulation. In stock cal's this allows the
TCC to apply smoothly (slip)
You need to fill the max table with 100% and the min table
with 90%
This will allow for 100% TCC duty cycle and a minimum of 10%
variance from the line pressure, meaning no more TCC slip.
The TCC will now be either fully locked or released. Works great!

Thanks, I'll give that a shot and see that fixes my problem.
