Did messing with my MAF screw up my tranny?

I have a 98Z28 and about a week ago I removed the screen to the MAF. About one week later I was driving it throughout the day and the 2-3 shift seemed to be gettting weaker and weaker. That night it felt like I just lost the 2-3 shift completely. I just went outside and reset the pcm with no luck. When I floor it the RPM's jump up fast, but the car does not really go. The 1-2 shift is fine though. I have a 3000 stall, could messing with the MAF cause any of this? Does this prob sound expensive? Thanks.

Yes it can. It reads the air different and lowers the trans/shift pressure. I tried 2 different ported MAFS and they did not work. Put stock MAF back on and it runs perfect.

I didn't have a prob w/my car... but know of peops that have had probs w/ported MAFs and A4s...
Not sure what it affects, but it's not permanent damage
just get a new unported stock MAF... so don't worry
not expensive (just post that you're looking for a stock MAF.. not sure what they're going for but can't be too bad... plus you can sell your ported MAF)

Removing the screen can alter the distribution of
airflow across the face of the MAF and change the
reported vs. actual airflow. This depends mainly on
the intake tract geometry, as to whether it makes
a problem. Bends right before the MAF will bias the
airflow distribution toward the outside. If you had
a MAF that was calibrated for descreened and the
application (like the Z06) the output would have
all of this accounted for, but you took one that
was all calibrated for screened and F-body airflow
distribution, and took out the straightening chunk.
A junkyard MAF should cost you little and you can
just swap face sections to see if this makes it go
back.
