Trans flush
I have a 98 z28 with a a4. Currently it has 74k on it. I got the car at 65k, the guy I got it from said he had the transmission flushed(who knows when).
The fluid looks real good, just a bit bit brown/red.
Should I get it flushed? If so when?

I'd git r dun, and filler er up with Amsoil transmission fluid, then you'll have peace of mind of knowing your covered by the best!
http://www.amsoil.com/catalog.aspx?code=ATF16-EA
Recommended for most automatic transmissions. Excellent in demanding environments such as towing, hauling or commercial use. Extends drain intervals. Saves time and costly maintenance expenses. Reduces operating temps by as much as 50°F.
SERVICE LIFE
AMSOIL Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid is recommended for use up to 50,000 miles under severe service* and up to 100,000 miles under normal service* or according to the vehicle manufacturer recommended intervals, whichever is longer. AMSOIL recommends thoroughly draining the transmission and flushing with new AMSOIL ATF to achieve a minimum 90% purity of new transmission fluid. Drain intervals may be extended further with oil analysis.

only way to get a real good flush is to have someone use a machine tapped into the lines.
dropping the pan only does about 55-65%.
any quick lube has the machine. bring em about 18 quarts of whatever you would like to use in there and they can run it for you.

You can flush it yourself if you're so inclined. Pop the send line to the tranny cooler and put a hose on the end, running in to a catch pan. Crank the car and it will start dumping the fluid out. Continuously add new fluid through the dipstick tube until the fluid running out is bright red. Reattach the tranny cooler line, and then top the fluid level off. Viola!
(It helps to have a second person on hand to add the fluid)

DO NOT FLUSH THE FLUID!!!!! In an older trans, flushing sometimes can dislodge some stuff that is actually holding your trans together. Just change fluid in the pan, and be done with it. On a high mileage trans it is NOT recommended to do a flush, or power flush, as some may call it.

^^^---myth. Replacing the fluid isn't going to hurt a 4L60E.
samson- I can't remember off the top of my head which one it is. It's been a while since I've done it. You've got a 50/50 chance, and worse case is you have to reconnect one and pop the other one off.
