I just got a 4L80E for rebuild pics.
I pick up a 4l80e today for my WS6 , I'm planing to change over from a M6 to a auto, The trans that i got i believe is a 4l80e but it don't say any thing on it showing it is, but the characteristics say it is from what Ive seen on here , can any body on here confirm it is and the year. The one that Ive seen say 4L80E on the side of it ,but this one don't. It does have the large tail shaft like the T400.What do i need to convert ? I be using a manual valve body and trans break , 4400 stall . Do i need the external neutral safety switch ? And what do i need the hook up my speedometer
The tag has 04-4-205

That unit is a rebuilt by gm judging by the sticker. The tag says its an 04 and for the price you got yourself a great deal. Can you get any more for that kind of money. Let me know. Vince

I tore the trans down today and to my surprise , every thing in it looked perfect, BUT there was no filter in it ,and all the pan bolts were tight !!!!!! I have seen transmissions that came from the factory for exchange with out a filter and the service man puts a new filter and fluid in them, Do you thing and some body bought a replacement trans from the dealer and did not know to install a filter . The fluid that was left in it was dark. But all the clutches looked basically new and the steels were shinny with no burn or chatter marks no were on any of the clutches & steels .Every thing look new. I have not remover the pistons yet. the trans may have a seal blown but if it did wouldn't it slip the clutches and burn them up ? Or could be in the valve body or pump. But i know now that have a good case and hard parts to start with, and that what i was looking for any way. I'm going to try to build one just to see if i can, I have built several TH400 that worked grate for me in my pro street a few year ago. If I don't have any luck with the build i have a good friend that's a GM certified transmissions specialist. But i'm going to try my self so i'm going to try it for the hell of it. Its not about the money ,its the challenge. And will need a little help from you guys, on the parts and up grades. I know there master transmission builder on here and sponsors as well. But every body had to try it for the first time. I'm not wanting any of your secrets just a little help with a few thing to get it right and waybe a few tricks. I will be putting a manual valve body and maybe a trans brake and a 4400 stall and a top of the line over haul kit.I will not be useing the ECM to control the trans .
Ive been doing alot of searching on here, and read that i need to change the forwered and direct pistons from the molded seals to the TH400 pistons with the lip seal,And how do i set up the speedometer on my car ,its a M6 right now.
Thanks guy for any help.

I just did the same as your doing. Manual shift, no t-brake tho. You should have no problem. I built mine, and I've never torn down a trans past the valve body. It's not as bad as I thought. The shift kit was the biggest pain, damn near a day doing it. The valve body will look like swiss cheese when your done. The trans I bought was like yours, damn near new on the inside. I almost hated to rebuild it. Oh, your speed O will plug right into the rear sensor on the 4l80, just have to recalibrate the computer.

I borrowed a kit from a friend who's a GM tech. It had the pieces for the pistons and seals, and the drivers for the bushings. You can buy new pistons with seals installed for 15-20 bucks though.
Oh yeah, when you buy the bushing kit, there will be one bushing missing. At least the one I bought. ( actually bought 2 sets, both missing the same bushing ) I can't remember wich drum it went in. You should be able to buy the bushing separate at a trans shop. The guy just gave me one after I told him the kit didn't come with that bushing.
