Default What trans to put behind nitroused 408

I am going to be dropping in a 408 stroker and be spraying about a 300 shot to it this winter and need a trans/converter to hold up to that. Crappy part is, I just bought a Performabuilt level 2 last winter because I had different power levels in mind. Now I'm going to be in the 850+ range and this trans won't hold up too long I don't think. So my question is, what trans/converter will?

I also would like to trans brake the car as it will be at the drag strip from time to time.

I was thinking TH400 with a Trans Brake, would this hold up to my power levels? Also, what would I need to swap this over to to a TH400 setup?

What's your suggestions guys/sponsors?

Thanks

Depends on what the car is used for, Is it street driven all the time with few track hits a year? or is it a weekly racer with only a few street miles? I am going 4l80E just because i like to drive mine on the street.

Agreed you would be pushing a level 2 or any 4l60e to the max at 850 rwhp. You might consider as mentioned if you like being able to drive the car on the highway etc a 4L80E

A Th400 or an 80e is the only trans I would recommend. I have guys pushing those #'s with the 4l60e series transmissions however they fully understand that things will break or need to be refreshed from time to time. If you do stay with the 60 you better get the best that is available. Billet shafts will be a must. Feel free to give us a call for the new build if you feel the need. Currently we have a new sale going with new policies from FLT. The link is in my sig. Good luck. Vince

Thanks guys. I think I'll just be going with the TH400. Which sponsors deal with them? I'm pretty sure that Performabuilt does...

Alright Frank, well I guess I'll be calling you again to get me set up with another trans lol. Hopefully one of these days I make up my mind on what I want to do with this car.

I just hope the conversion to the TH400 isn't too costly...

Frank, can you tell me the difference between the auto/stick valve body and the full manual valve body that you have listed on your site? The other thing I'm worried about with the TH400 is running out of gear on the street. I think I read that the gear ratios are substantially steeper than the 4L60.

The auto valve body is just that auto the shift are governor and vacume controlled , The full manual well its like a manual trans without a clutch whatever gear you have it in is what it will start in ,

On the gears yes you are going to be turning 30 percent more rpm in 3rd gear than you do now in 4th the 400 is a 3 speed meaning 30 percent more fuel, 30 percent more RPM and 30 percent more engine wear.
and you wil not have lockup as 400s don't so you will feel the converter slip feel at low cruising speeds all the time.
This is not a swap I suggest for a daily driver only a weekend warrior

Its not going to be a good highway cruiser

Cool, thanks for the clarification. This car is def not a DD so I think I'll be okay in that regard. Also, I am interested in putting a trans brake in. How would I go about doing that with the 400?

didnt hear anything about a th350 this trans will easilly handle these power levels it takes an extra 30 hpto run a 400. it doesnt matter who builds the 60e it definetly wont live. anything over 450 hp and slicks or good hooking car on drag radials will start to show the weak hard parts in your 60e some parts theres no getting around ie input drum.
