Smile Retro: 1996 Fastest Cars in America

Found this on Youtube....kind of neat. 10 cars, two of each make, one stock and one modified....Z28, T/A, Mustang GT, ZR1 and Viper. Top speed winner for stock and modified was surprising. Enjoy!

cool vid. i wonder why they didn't use a 96 ram air WS6. come to think of it the T/A they used looks like a base model since it doesn't have the raised spoiler. it appears the video was actually made in 1995 since when they discuss the ZR1 they say "it was discontinued in may of this year) so i'm guessing that was late summer/fall 95 when this was filmed?

and the lingenfelter firebird is definately a 93-94 because of the airbag.

Wouldn't consider 1996 retro by any stretch of the word. Pretty cool videos though.

the T/A WAS bone stock and base? it was even an A4

I thought the ZR1 died in 96?

that ZR1 was quick but that was kinda a surprise about the Lingenfelter T/A, that bad boy was cruisin!

i meant that i wondered why they didn't use a WS6 and then i was just commenting on the fact that since it had the low end spoiler it might not have even been a 96 (i've seen a few 95s with it, many 94s, but not too many 96's)

the ZR1 ended in 95. in 96 chevy had the Grand Sport LT4 and collectors edition (actually all 6 speeds in 96 were LT4 whether they were a GS, a collectors edition or just a run of the mill C4)

and yea 14.9@93 on an LT1 is a terrible time. i ran 2 17 second passes in my car due to terrible wheelspin the first and only trip i ever had to the track and on the 3rd pass i heated up the tires a little bit and ran a 14.4@96mph spinning to a 2.3 second 60ft time. how they couldn't manage better is beyond me.

I think "retro" is fitting....considering how far all of these cars have come in the last 13 years.

I bought that video TAPE back in the day, still have it lol. Once in a while I'll put it on just to hear that Lingenfelter car WFO. One cool behind the scenes tidbit was Vortech was complaining about Lingenfelter not running cats. Good ole' John told them, that's fine we will put a cat on and we'll slap on a blower. That shut them up! Good stuff,

Larry

Because they were not on a prepped drag strip... The times still are a little slow probably, but you can't expect them to pull off average times on a regular road.

FIREBIRD FTMFW!!!!! Whats with R&T and their times? Unless its german made it seems like they try to just run it under. I think they're German trolls LOL!!! I think its really sad that the Viper was the least stable car of the bunch, at first i was like"well thats becuase its a targa, i'll give it that". But then the Corvette was just as stable as everything else and isn't it also a Targa? Regardless, for $80,000 in 1996, i can't even drive my car as fast as a $22,000 Firebird? Guess i made the right choice when i was 9 to love Firebirds forever.

what ever happened to Vector? Those were the futuristic exotic cars of America and you never ever hear of anyone testing them or even remembering what once was...

IIRC I think it was R&T that went through like three of those in two days. One caught fire, another snapped a timing chain and after the third I think had a electrical they called it quits on it. Never remember reading anything else about it after that. I do remember someone on here earlier in the year I believe showing a link to Vector saying they were going to put together another car and shoot for the top speed record.

I wish magazines would post 60ft times, I have seen videos of magazines doing their 0-60 and 1/4 mile tests, one of them I have saved on my youtube acocut of a 93 Trans Am motor week tested and it looked like a rolling burning out. Wasn't even at a track, just some random strip, most likley at a road course

That black Lingenfelter Formula was a bad dude! That car was all over the magazines.

The T/A was a T/A "GT". It was marketed as a cheaper, fewer options car. So it got the regular firebird wing.

The trans am I owned before the one I have now was a red 96' M6 base cloth TA with the low firebird spoiler. Don't see to many of them, but I changed it out with a high rise anyways.

The high low rise spoiler was optional from 94-96, standard on the 97 and 93s. The GTs just had all the options the 93s came with standard. That black lingenfelter was a sema car, I havent seen the vdeo but if it has FM5s on it, GM sold it a while back.
