I wouldn't rip on Ford for recalling the cars. Just because there are 20,000 cars being recalled, doesn't mean they all have problems. They simply isolated the batch of cars they determined may have the problem. Doing this ensures the problem will be addressed once and for all. Regardless of product quality (perceived or real), initiating recalls can be a good PR move. This shows the consumer that the factory is proactively addressing a known issue. This compared to taking the wait and see mentality which can backfire on the factory if the consumer finds out the factory knew about a problem, and did nothing to address it.
GM on the other hand fails miserabily in this regards. Historically they prefer not to initiate recalls, but rather handle a known problem on an owner-by-owner basis. Two models come to mind; the 89-94 Blazer/Jimmy and the 99-05 Grand Am. Both have a well documented history of not only overall poor quality, but specific issues that in all reality should have forced a recall from GM.
I have owned versions of both of these vehicles and experienced almost every documented issues they are known for.
