Default So I failed emissions....UPDATE

Had to go through emissions to register the car so I got a little nervous about not having cats. Sometimes they check but they usually don't. So I get the sheet back and it says fail. I failed the gas cap test and cranking bulb didn't turn on with the key in. And both of those are only covered under the federal emission warranty for 2 yrs/24k miles. To fix the the indicator light you replace the entire cluster which is 700 bucks installed at the dealer. Sweet. Hoping my extended warranty will cover it.

You're not seriously thinking about paying 700 for a new cluster are you? Take that sucker out and replace the bulb, I would guess it's a simple solder in LED of some sort. You really don't have anything to lose.

Still sucks that you failed over two fairly minor issues.

No way i'm paying 700. Sometimes the light comes on and sometimes it doesn't so i think it's electrical and not just a bad bulb. Thought it was funny how they didn't check that I'm catless but they got me for that stuff. Hoping to get a new cluster with the extended warranty though.

All they do out here is plug your car into a computer to scan for OBDII codes. Technically they're supposed to do a visual inspection for emissions control devices, but I've NEVER seen them do it.

I'm in Az. They tried to check my Vette but it was to low for them to get the mirror far enough under. They checked my Ty too but that was because they couldn't scan it, took the morons 15 minutes and calling out 3 different people to find them, and it was bone stock. I guess it's gonna be about 650 bucks to replace the cluster, and that's at dealer cost +10%. And the car would be down for a few days while they sent it out to get rebuilt.

This one doesn't have a picture but the description is correct (CTS 2005 (cluster), US, V series). You should send him a message. $200 isn't a bad price.

They usually go pretty quickly on ebay. I was able to pick one up for $150 a while back.

I had a similar issue with my Mountaineer. My solution was to take the cluster out and hot wire that bulb to another one that turned on an off with the ignition.

Pretty sure I figured it out with the help of some buddies. Apparently there is a GM TSB out there saying that the car is working correctly. The way GM programmed the car, it will not illuminate the bulb if the vehicle is turned off then put back into the on position. If you wait about 30 seconds and then try it, it works. Now I have to try to explain this to the guys at the emissions place, this should be fun. I'm gonna take the TSB down there to show them and explain what's going on and see what they say.

Ben, I was doing this in my car today. It did exactly what yours did. You have to wait about 20 seconds for it to come back on.

The SES? Thats kind of an important light to have..lol. I know a lot of people that just bust the light for inspections but it sounds like your state checks for it when you turn the key on.
