Default What not to have happen to your LS6

My 05 CTS-V decided that last Friday, my last day of work before a 2 week vacation, that it was a perfect time to shoot itself in the head. Driving along and it just sputters for a sec and shuts off. Crank it and no compression in at least one cylinder (glad i didnt crank it much).

Got it home and torn down and found a broken intake valve spring and what was left of the intake valve. I was suprised to find that for the most part the car is pretty easy to work on. Tight squeeze down to the plugs and exhaust manifold, but I had the head off in a little over an hour taking my time.

Its got just over 131k miles on it now, its completely stock. I am definitely going to replace all of the valve springs! Thankfully (i guess) the head of the valve stayed wedged into the top of the piston and the cylinder wall has no damage. Just need a piston, rings, valve springs, intake valve, and the head repaired (new seat and guide and the combustion chamber cleaned up).

Looks to be either 1 or 8 (unless the photo is reversed). Not the dreaded "old #7".

At 131k I think you're crazy to not put another longblock in it instead?

Nah the rest of the motor is rock-solid. You would never know the car had that mileage unless i told you. Ive put 32k highway miles on it since last halloween.

I'm sure other springs would follow though, so I am definitely replacing them.

Oh i'd love to do heads/cam/tune with a blower on top but this is just the family car. Its staying stock. A couple years from now I want to move up to the gen2 CTS-V.

Not doutbing you but i guarantee you thought the motor was rock solid before this happened so. Id definetly be upgrading but its your time and money. I know I wouldnt have that much confidence.

HEads would be on the way to TEA for a port job and id be putting a forged bottom end in the car.

My thoughts exactly. I travel a lot doing IT support for a large bank, and i got tired of driving cheap crap. If im going to spend most of my day in the car i want it to be enjoyable!

did you really beat on it? Is it normal for an ls6 to do this after this low of miles?

I drive the car hard but not constantly beating on it. Its not uncommon for LS motors to break a valve spring, I just got unlucky and had it drop the valve and cause a lot more damage.

Got the new piston in. I was suprised to find out that the factory pistons are Mahle pistons. The rod bearing looked like it just came out of the box and the inside of that motor is spotless. I've seen plenty of low mileage motors look way worse than that. Synthetic oil is really amazing stuff!

Yep, my intake valvespring in #1 died at 38k miles. It didn't kill my piston (thank god) but otherwise, 131k miles is pretty good!

Glad your block is okay, are you going to do a cam?

I'd contact TEA to find out if they could repair the combustion chamber and do a stage one on it at the same time. New bearings, rings, oil pump, water pump, small cam, new lifters, and hardened pushrods will square it all away. New lifters and hardened pushrods would be a good idea even if you kept the stock cam.

When should i really consider changing the springs out on a stock motor that i track 4-6 times a year? I have 92k on it right now.

Yes, Mahle stuff for many factory motors. Not like that is anything 'decent' though.
