2005, ls6

just noticed some oil drops on the driveway and jacked her up and noticed i have about 1 inch crack in the oil pan im wondering if you guys have any pointers on taking the oil pan off... how hard is it... how long will it take...

also i just called around all the auto parts stores... no one has one.... and then i called the dealer and they want like 550, 600 bux.. so im prolly gunna have it welded is this a good idea will it hold up.. thanks for your input

thanks for the find, i saw that and im kind of in a hurry to get the car back on the road.. i might go with that... but i can get the small crack welded for 20 bux... what do you guys think. will the weld hold up

Probably will hold, but your gonna have to take the pan off anyways, might as well do it right the first time and not have to worry about it anymore.

Call any local LSX performance shops, whenever someone ordered a crate ls6 they come with cts-v oil pans. Chances are they wont use that pan on the car they bought it for and have it lying around. I just grabbed a brand new cts-v oil pan for my 93 mustang for 100 bucks from a local lsx shop.

was the pan hard to change i see some bolts under the crossmember that seem like there gunna be tough to get to... how was it

I tried JB Weld on my old 97 v6 camaro years ago after someone punched a hole in my oil pan with a screw driver. It held for a couple days and thats it.

I fixed a rusted through steel oil pan on a F-150 with JB Weld. It lasted for years and never had an issue, but I don't think it's a proper repair for a crack on an Al pan.

Welding is a perfectly acceptable repair for a crack on an Al pan. If the crack is through the rail, great care should be taken to assure the rail is ground straight an flat after welding. Cast Al can be a funny animal that will be even worse after the crack is bathed in oil. Your welder may need to weld it out then grind the weld out and reweld to eliminate porosity.

I used stuff called alumi-weld on a coolant connection before and it held forever. It was on a dirt bike though.

Just have a welder weld it. I'd weld it up for $20, a 1" crack isn't hard to fix, you just have to make sure the crack is cleaned out really well before you start.

i saw a pan off a ls6 v local here in phoenix the other day for like $25 or something like that, gotta look for it again though.

The only way to get the pan off with the motor in the car is to support the engine and drop the front subframe. Unbolt everything form the subframe (steering rack, lower ball joints, motor mounts, etc. etc. etc. and lower it down) I did it on my stock motor when I installed ARP rod bolts. Not too bad of a job if you're set up to do it.

Yeah, that's how it was explained to me by the V tech @ Lindsay. The labor quote was huge - like over $1000. My car's oil pan gasket has been seeping a bit for over a year now, but I'm not up for all that work to fix a non-issue.

holy... damn this sucks.. im really trying to find someone who will try his luck and weld it on the car(with no luck yet finding someone)... i really dont think that its going to be possible for me to remove or pay some one to remove....

If it were me I'd grind the paint off, use some acetone to clean the surface along with blowing compressed air into the crack to push any oil out of it, and then using a REALLY strong epoxy/chemical weld compound. I'd then let it dry, and hit the pan with a few coats of paint to prevent rust.

I'd certainly do that before dropping money on a new pan and having to spend those few hours underneath the car.

well luckly i have a friend whos dad is a aluminum welder and he said that he can do this on the car no problem... hes done it to 3 cars previous and says that ittl be a quick fix and also its gunna be free.. but i have to wake to not this sunday but the next... well thanks for all the help and the input... ill let yall know how it is when its done
