Dual plane cam pick.
The dual planes are coming down in price and would like to know if anyone has specked a cam to match.I know it is a wide open question but just looking for some input.I am running L-92 heads,a 6 speed and 3:55 gears in a 55 chevy.26" tall tire. Thanks

I say dont run the dual plane, run the vic jr. The cam needs of the L92 heads are generally milder, and that leads to great driveability even with the single plane intake. My L92 headed 6.0 drove flawlessly with the vic jr and an 850mighty demon carb with the stock cam, and even with the current cam, it drives very nice.

I do not daily drive my car. I do cruise it in city traffic, and down the highway as much as possible. As long as you go mild on the cam DEFINATELY get the single plane intake. the dual plane will only hold the engine back on the top end, and I would NOT pay ANY extra money to get 1 - even for a DD car. With the stock truck cam my LY6 would rev cleanly and happily to 6500.
What are your goals for the car? That would help narrow down a cam choice.

Car goals
I want it to be as dependable as possible, the wife able to drive it,yes it will have air and power steering.I want it to pull to 6000 and not be slow.Howards grinds a cam with 600. lift and near stock duration.I am an old big block guy and have to adapt to the new way of thinking.I still have a big block 6 speed 73 camaro.I want the 55 to be the opposite. Thanks again.

I want to take advantage of the flow capabilities of my L-92 heads so 600 or a little more seems right 226-234@050.on a 110 centerline. That is my amature cam pick. This is my first LS build and I am open to any and all comments good and bad. Thanks again....
my car runs 11.39 @ 120 in the 1/4 with a 5 spd. my cam is on a 114 and is installed 4* advanced. It is lacking a little in low speed power, but it will pull down to 12-1300 in gear. It isnt happy at those low of revs and wants a bit of load apply'd to make it run smooth. I'm sure you understand what I mean when i say it "bucks" a little bit down that low at super light load. Up around 2-2200 it smooths out real nice.
The cam you spec'd on a 110LSA will have a ROUGH IDLE, and ALOT worse low rpm manners than mine, up till at least 2000, and wont smooth out till a few hundred revs past that, just FYI. But I'm sure it will make a few more lbs of torque when it "come on the cam" and be able to run as hard as the grind I am running up top. I think it should make power till just over 6-6300, and it will run real good. My 6.0 /l92 setup runs WAY harder than the 454 I removed from the car this spring.
I dont know how your wife drives, but I wouldnt let mine drive my car with the cam thats in it, the below 2K manners wouldnt fly. Obviously you can deal with this, but if your true objective is the best driveability I would go wider on LSA, and slightly smaller on duration than what you picked, something like the GM 218-230 @ .050" cam(I think its on a 117LSA?)
If driveability is the main concern, then choose a WIDE LSA , and keep intake duration in the low 220's or smaller.
Pick exhaust duration about 10* bigger than the intake lobe.
If you can deal with the rough idle and want the increase in mid range torque, choose the narrower LSA
Hope this helps.

Cam pick
Thanks for your input,we are all looking for that perfect cam that pulls from 1000 to 10,000 idles smooth and gets great gas mileage. The more I learn the more I realize how much I don't know.I am trying to download a camquest program and will see what a computer picks for me.I will let you know.

Just realise that the L92 head has extremely large valves, and huge ports, and that makes them less forgiving of "over camming", and they typically run real good with SUBSTANTIALLY less cam that we used to pick for "old school" sbc/bbc builds. This is actually a GOOD thing, as it allows us to cam small for driveability, yet still get impressive overall performance.
Good luck, and let us know how it turns out!
